If the two variables and two equations are confusing you, just use one variable.

Have x be the number of adult tickets. Then, the amount of child tickets is 2010 - x.

12*x + 7*(2010 - x) = 18430

Take from there, x = 872.

It's okay OP, I interpreted the sentence to mean sale of tickets from the year 2010 too. I assumed it was some sort of problem where you take advantage of the fact that the number of tickets is an integer, but that still isn't enough information.
