Why are people so stupid, /sci/?

Why?

Well she is right, in a since. An orbit can technically go on forever, and it is in motion. Of course it doesn't conflict with the laws of thermodynamics either because it does no work and there's no friction.

actually there is friction, its just pretty negligible. Practically, the motion is perpetual, but technically its not.

Wait, gravity causes friction? this is news to me

In a hypothetical scenario in which there are two completely stable objects that will never degrade orbiting each other in a perfect orbit, would they eventually slow to a stop? Where would the heat of the friction be generated?

>>3259675

It's beyond the point. It's a kind of perpetual motion you can get arbitrarily close to with an ideal system (that doesn't necessarily involve gravity), because it does not violate the laws of TD.

I never said gravity has friction, I was only pointing out that space is not in fact a perfect vacuum, (there's a small amount of dust and hydrogen gas and stuff) so you can't completely rule out friction. It's fucking minuscule compared to the momentum of the planets, but its there.

>> No.3259700

Even the orbits slow down. None of the orbits are truly circular so they exert tidal forces on the central body. The tidal forces dissipate the energy of the system as heat into the respective bodies. It just occurs on very long time scales.

Perpetual motion is a bad term though. The general public seems to confuse it with infinite intertia. It's possible to construct a decent approximation of perpetual motion. In fact, a flywheel is a perfect example of such a system. Massive flywheels are often used to handle peak power demands. They spin them up and they just spin for a long time until the power grid hits a spike and then they dump the kinetic energy into the grid.

>> No.3259702

I hate it when people are condescending to you when you try to use science. I had a discussion with some of my mates about the nature of free will and why I think it doesn't exist. When I pointed out some interesting facts that I used to come to my conclusion they started acting like I wasn't making sense. I asked them if what I was saying was rubbish and they said it was, why? It was rubbish because they bible says god gave man free will so all my critical thinking was bullshit. To each their own, but I hate how they make me feel stupid for looking at things scientifically or logically.

Also OP's picture pisses me off. I'm an undergrad and Ive started taking my science courses (University physics 2, Calculus 2 and chemistry.). In my Physics 1 class you won't believe how many people argue with the lecturer or want to prove the lecturer wrong. Not only does it make the person look silly and spoils the atmosphere of the lecture, it also derails the topic and wastes time.

yes, its most notable with orbital black holes, but everything emits gravity waves:
-Two objects orbiting each other in a quasi-Keplerian planar orbit
-A spinning non-axisymmetric planetoid

the energy is carried by the gravity wave, the earth sun system only loses about 200W so its a very small amount

Why would you need to point that out? I mean, we're there to do physics and not algebra. If the lecturer fudges up on some number crunching I don't think its enough to halt the class unless it effects the physics side of it. For example, stopping the lecturer to say that he got the wrong answer because he used 50kg instead of 5kg is a bit pointless in the long run.

I think it's because they don't self guess. To be honest it's a western cultural thing, where it is seen as more attractive to "stick to your guns" than it is to be right... or to be wrong and learn why.

I agree this person is stupid because even if he didn't know better, even if he knew absolutely nothing about forces, energy, etc.. , if he simply had the common sense to question himself this wouldn't have happened.
All he knows about the planets, sun, moon, etc.. is that they have been moving that way for a very long time... That's it... A stupid person who doesn't question their own thoughts might shout out that this implies perpetual motion.. But I sometimes think even those "stupid" people COULD come to their senses if they just had a mental self check...
Sadly, it seems sooooo many people just do not have it.

Not what I meant, bro.
When you take Gen Physics, you look into things to a certain accuracy and depth.
Then you get into your junior and senior level courses, and they get a little deeper and a little more accurate.
Then as a graduate student, you go as deep as you can and the math is as accurate as it can get.
I merely asked about this shit that we would learn in the junior level classes. And I wouldn't ask it until the end of class anyways.

the term "Perpetural Motion" actually relates to a hypothetical machine that produces more work than it consumes, reguardless to if it is indefinitely or not.

Planetary Orbit isn't a machine, it's a system operating in the vaccum of space.

Those two statements because even the motion of objects orbiting in an empty vacuum still radiate away their energy in the form of gravitational waves. It's just that it will take a LONG time for those orbits to degrade.

This person was talking on Facebook. I have a simlar friend who proceeds to write the most nonsensical (for lack of a better word) bullshit, that i'm always at a lost for words (pic fucking related)

He's a nice enough guy, but here is the thing about people. There are those that have a desire to be smart, and those who desire to be precieved as smart. Both of these people are the fucking latter.

You take knowledge as absolute .. Either you have knowledge on all subjects or you lack knowledge on all subjects..I'm talking about scientific knowledge, and you assume that lack of that must impact other areas of life..I don't

We have division of work, and most of us are capable on functioning in our own branch. No matter how smart you think you are there are situations that would make you piss you self in shame. If you ask basics of reasoning and philosophy would be a mustknow in my ideal world , not scientific stuff..Most of us learned critical reasoning through science , but it is not reserved just to epistemology. But I understand and partially agree with you, though I was just being pragmatic and learned long time ago that there would always be stupid people.I live in a country that basically has free education and we still have shitload of morons. They prefer ignorance.... eventually you learn to live with that.

Once you know a little, you think you know everything.

Therefore, the professor clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.

This explains all those flagrantly stupid people you run across who will tell you straight faced that people only use 10% of their brains.

They're not actually that stupid. They have just learned a little, and suddenly believe themselves to be experts.

Whereas people that have taken the time to learn a LOT, don't usually tend to go waving their knowledge-dicks around, because they have that sneaking suspicion they may be wrong.
