/sci/ I'll be going to uni in the fall for biochemistry and was considering double majoring in math as well.

Is this a good idea? Any advice from math majors.

Sure thing

Will be pretty fucking hard bro, considering not many of the classes will overlap

Why the fuck not.
Seriously, give me one reason you shouldn't.

I hope your loans have deferment in the contract.

Biochemistry and Maths?
It'll be pretty hard I guess. Nothing stops you from trying though.

You can always chose to just take one of them as you 'main' subject and concentrate on that.

Most people are still retarded at that level. You should be able to handle it given that you're fairly intelligent, motivated and willing to compromise you social life at times.

We live in a world of specialists. Study math in your free time if you enjoy it. But only minor in it--at the most. Or vice versa. Math major + biochem minor.

Double majoring is only acceptable if they are VERY related (e.g., math and physics, psychology and neuroscience, biology and biochemistry, etc., etc.).

Don't listen to this fag. Take both, if it's too much cut down on one of them. It's better to stay with a broad field of knowledge than specializing and finding out that shit doesn't interest you anymore, forcing you to either tough it out, miserable with your work or going back for another degree.

And don't pretend like you're dedicated to one field, if that was the case you wouldn't be looking to major in 2 different fields.

You're leaving me hanging here man, still waiting for a fucking answer.

>> No.3252780

It'll be a breeze. First year is just elementary stuff. I do think it would be better to specialize a little more after that though, since you should be getting a feel for which field interests you the most. Any way, doing them both's better than switching or going back later so go for it.

Course load I suppose but it should just work out to 20 hours a semester. Has anyone here done more than the standard hours who can tell me how it is?

If it's too hard for you, you drop it. It's not a problem.

I plan on specializing in biology but there are so many ways higher level math can be applied to biological systems it seems like it would be advantageous.

I studied at 175% during half a term and at 150% over the last term. It was all advanced math and physics courses too, and I can tell you that it takes a lot of work. But it was manageable, since the subjects were interesting, and I managed to get great grades on almost everything. Don't think it will help me much in the end though, but I did learn alot.

Great, now you know which one to cut if you get stressed out. Just go for a minor in maths in that case.
