3247435 No.3247435 [Reply] [Original]

For obvious reasons the various classes of animals are fundamentally very different although they can share many similarities on the surface.

The mammal skeleton for example, although it has taken so many forms, can never be confused with a fish or insect.

The problem I have with most pictures of aliens I see is that these creatures look superficially very strange and truly alien but they always seem to be modeled after the body plan of an animal class from earth (most either resemble mammal or insect body plans)

Aren't there some nice alien designs that take into account that this thing evolved from a different basis?

I will dump alien pics while I am waiting for responses. .

I think alien life will look quite similar to animals living on this planet, IF the parameters for life there are quite equal like those here.
Some of them would include atom distribution, temperature, type of atmosphere and gravity.

Yes. They will probably have eyes in the front which are located near their mouth and nose so they can see and smell what they eat etc.

Since we know that animals evolved the same "solutions" to the various challenges of surviving independently we can assume that on other planets such things will happen too.

BUT you can never get rid of the starting point. You can change it drastically but in evolution there can never be a total reset.

So this starting point will always be there - and I am just interested into seeing some of these that make sense but are different than those on earth.

Agree. The physics of quantum mechanics is present all over the universe, and thus life will follow some of the same geometrical/biological rules present on earth. Gravity, though, has a major effect on size of the organism. It was theorized that the dinosaurs grew so big because of the amount of oxygen available and the earth's gravity was so weak (something that had to do with the moon). Don't know too much about it so

Yes of course.

Lets imagine that of some reason all mammals would disappear. All the free places will be filled by other animals and will start resembling them.

But just like Dolphins only resemble fish superficially those other animals that will take the mammals places can never get rid of their fundamental structure.

All I am saying is: It is unlikely that the same structures should happen to be the same everywhere in the universe (especially considering the variety we have on earth alone) so I am interested in seeing some other body structures that are different and could work.

It would be probable that any planet with conditions comparable to ours would have animals that look almost exactly like some of ours. The law of energy conservation works all over the universe, and the practicality of form is an essential part to natural selection. 3 billion years of that on this planet leads to animals that succeeded due to being the best designed. There would be similar examples on others.

Imagine visiting an alien planet and the only difference between an alien deer and an Earth deer is the shape of the ears.

>3 billion years of that on this planet leads to animals that succeeded due to being the best designed

no

they succeeded because they were good enough. Not always the best. There's a number of flaws and problems in animals like the optic nerve creating a blind spot in the eye, and similar.

Note also that the majority of our sizable fauna is a) mamillian and b) tetrapod.

This is a product of the earth's climate and mass extinction events that allowed those particular classes/whatever to develop and come to the fore.

Natural selection will fill the same niches in the ecology (provided they exist) but there's no reason to say that they'll be filled with mamillian tetrapods rather than, say, insectiod tripods.

Note also- that what's best on earth here, may not be what's 'best' on planet hypotheticallia.

so tl;dr OP, most aliens resemble earth creatures because we have difficulty imagining what life forms other than the ones we know might look like.

I think you'll be dissapointed in regard to the science part of your question. Scientists don't really have the time or wish to speculate (unless they have evidence to speculate upon).
I don't think any biologist will be thinking of alternative working structures for an organism.

I think nucleic acids like RNA will be somewhat universal because of how versatile and robust it is. RNA can encode genetic info, can be an enzyme without having to form a protein, etc.

I think the big difference will be the "power plants" of their cells. The chance of the endosymbiotic events like what happened here on Earth (once to get the mitochondrion and again to pick up the chloroplast) being similar are minuscule.

I can see life picking up multiple "external" origin organelles on a different planet before developing structure and complexity in body form.

First, let me just say that you're a gentleman and a scholar for providing that link. Second, here's a similar program about evolution:

The limit of our imagination is mixing and matching elements from things that already exist. Like a unicorn, horns and horses both exist.

I agree, OP.
If they evolve on a planet unlike ours, then they should be creatures unlike the ones found here.

Infinity is a concept, not a thing, you can't draw it like an unicorn.

I would like them modeled to something that would look more like animals that evolved before the asteroid that knocked into earth and changed the environment here which took out the dinosaurs. I mean, what would life look like now if that little event hadn't happened I wonder?

I imagine that there are earth like places all over the place but that not the same kinds of things happened there (like I mentioned previously).

What if there are earths that are in various stages of our earth and beyond and they are in those states because 'circumstances' (for lack of better words) were different for them, for one reason or another?

>because of the amount of oxygen available
Reasonable sounding.

>and the earth's gravity was so weak (something that had to do with the moon).
OMG WTF. You can't be serious, can you?
