The use of repetition and the way the brain is able to interconnect memories based on a common thread helps to create a priority system that can sort out the majority of static while still retaining a huge library of significant information? Having a common thread that can trigger the brain to search through related memories is how we can actually work with the amount of information that is available. I don't remember the specifics, but that was the general impression I got from the random psych lectures I was awake for.
