/sci/,
Would you say it's worth spending time at an average-decent university, which is nowhere near the top 10 - gaining a BA in Law or International Relations or would the time would be better spent getting a vocational degree (QQ me dumb)

>> No.3240397

On the same note - is a BA in anything worth the time and student debt?

Student debt? What is that? Why would... oh, Americans. Aren't you cute?

Are you from the UK OP becuase if you are unless you're going to a top 10 university doing outstanding course (Maths, Chemistry, Physics, History etc...) Your degree isn't going to pay for itself easily. Your best bet would be to get onto an internship or a 'earn while you learn' course with a company where they train you and pay you. From then it is very easy to move up the ladder.

People will say because you lack a degree there is only so far you can go, but with the rise in tuition fee's you will find a larger proportion of people not going to university or the more lacking courses will fold therefore more and more people are going to be without degree's nulifying the 'need a degree' crap

going to university if you want to go to university is always better than not going to university.

>> No.3240427

OP here , yes I live in the UK and just wanted to say - holy crap you guys are smart. I friggin' love to read this board.
Other than that - I find arts quite easy to learn so I would take a BA in, preferably, International Relations leading to a career as either
A) corporate lawyer (with law school on top of the degree)
or B) Civil Servant - diplomat.
Both sound exciting and intellectually stimulating careers.

That would work if you went to a decent university, to go down that route you will need to have your degree. Get into a decent university:- Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffeild, Nottingham a really really good one to get into would be Northumbria university, what are your expected grades?

>> No.3240487

Already got them since I've had a gap year:
A in English
CCC in Biology, History and Foreign Language
GCSE - A in IT
Plus lots of travelling experience

>>3240487
sucky grades I know. But I am willing to make up for it and exceed any expectations. You guys and life experiences during the gap years taught the importance of study.

if you are set on a top 20 uni or something, quite a lot of them run foundation programs which u would still be able to get on with CCC, its an extra year of debt though.

i would recommend not going to university at all. its a really shitty move for a britfag you face 9000 pounds tuition a year and little job expectancy when you graduate. the best move for you is starting a career in something like banking, i have relatives who make 100k+ in banking sector with no degree that just worked there way up from teller.

What the fuck am I reading?

OP, Law isn't worth studying at BA. International Relations, however, is. It's a decent enough course and with it you could probably land a place at Law school and get actual legal qualifications.

I am a corporate lawyer (ask me anything) and I did History as my BA. If you're more interested in the technical side of things, go do an advanced apprenticeship for a big company and they'll put you through university if you're any good.

They aren't bad. Only one way to find out, isn't there?

I dont care what country you are from or what college you are going to.

as long as the college is "recognized" at all, even if it is not even in the top 100 (or if your country has a limited number of >4 year colleges, then top 50 or whatever), and it offers legitimate degrees (Eg: not university of phoenix online)...

its always better to get a 4 year degree than a 2 year degree (in the same field).

Dont get me wrong... you would be smarter to become a nurse (2 years) than pretty much any other Bachelors level job, even physicist or chemist or mathematician.

>advanced apprenticeship
That sounds incredibly awesome, however I wouldn't know where to get one or even expect to get into, since competition must be 300 applicants for 1 spot.

>Northumbria
Bloody British unis have those retarded motherfucking names. It is however one of the top unis in the UK.

>Ask a Corporate Lawyer anything
How long have been in business? Are you working as a private lawyer? How difficult was it to beat competition and odds to get to where you are now?

>> No.3243545

>>3243524

>It is however one of the top unis in the UK.

It's not, it's nowhere near. I'm not into bashing universities but the top ones in the country are

Oxford
Cambridge
ICL
KCL
UCL
Bath
Lancaster
York
Loughborough
St Andrews
Durham
Edinburgh
Southampton

etc etc

>How long have been in business?

3 years qualified.

>Are you working as a private lawyer?

Yes.

>How difficult was it to beat competition and odds to get to where you are now?

I wouldn't know, really. I did my undergrad at Leeds (avoid it, unless you're going for the #1 corrupt uni in the UK) and did my LLB at Queen Mary.

Regarding the advanced apprenticeship, my cousin did one and got onto it with average GCSE and A Level grades. They aren't impossible to get on, but they are very good. The other candidates will be mostly retarded, too.

I should have probably mentioned that, but that's not the point.

IMO, every established university is a good one. It's what you make of it that counts, and what you apply the knowledge you learned.
