I have a question for you /sci...

A boy is stranded in the desert with 45 watermelons. An oasis lies 15 miles away. Each mile he walks he must eat 1 watermelon for nourishment. He can carry a maximum of 15 watermelons at any time.

Given that he can put down any watermelons he is carrying at each (discrete) mile - What is the maximum number of watermelons he can successfully take to the Oasis?

He would carry 15, walk to the oasis and eat one per mile. When he arrives he will only have his last one left.

>1 watermelon for one mile
So the boy is a fatshit nigger?

>> No.3229930

45 watermelons, can carry 15 each turn. So he ofc takes the most each time. He makes three walks. Walks 5 miles, drops 5, walks back 5, except for the last walk.

So he now has 20 watermelons 10 miles from the destination. He can for example take 5, walk two miles, drop one 8 miles from the oasis, and walk back. Now he is 10 miles from oasis, with 15 watermelons at his feet and 1 watermelon ahead of him. He walks straight to the oasis, picking up the left over watermelon. Result is 6.

I don't know if this is the maximized solution, but this is the way of thinking that will lead to the optimal solution.

>> No.3229933

take everything to the 6th mile marker, (you will have 15) then from there take 15 the rest of the way (9 miles), you have 6 left.

You guys have the right idea. I'm wondering if that's really the best answer, though.

Also, I'm wondering how one could prove what the best answer is mathematically. OP, do you have the answer for this shit or are we doing your homework for you?

>> No.3229944

>>3229933
you'll actually have 7 left. you wont have to eat the last one when you get to the oasis.

>> No.3229948

if he caries everything to some location n, he will lose 6n in the proses leaving 45-6n, he must then have at least 15-n left. the maximum n is then 6.

this is not a rigorous proof, but i think it is correct.

and what the fuck are you babbling about?

>>3229948

Good reasoning but it actually costs 5n to bring the watermelons to location at distance n from the startingpoint. (up, down, up, down, up).

why the hell did you have him do his drop at 5 miles and then do another drop 1 mile later??
why the fuck not just do the drop at 6 miles and not be a faggot?

>> No.3229986

So we've got the correct reasoning, even if there are some derpy typos and miscalculations in some of our answers.

Can we write a clear system of equations for this shit or what?

It takes 2 to move up to 13 one mile. Do this 3 times costs 5, leaves 40 14 miles away. So...
35 13 miles away;
30 12 miles away;
Reduce to 2 trips per mile, costing 3;
27 11 miles away;
24 10 miles away;
21 9 miles away;
18 8 miles away;
15 7 miles away;
Final trip of 7 miles carrying 15 leaves 8 watermelons.

Boy starts out with 45 watermelons
Takes 15 watermelons
Walks 5 miles eating 5 watermelons
Drops 5 watermelons at 5 mile mark
Walks back eating 5 watermelons

He now has 30 watermelons left
Takes another 15
Walks 5 miles eating 5 watermelons
Drops 5 watermelons at the 5 mile mark again. There are now 10 watermelons sitting there
Walks back eating 5 watermelons

There are 15 watermelons left
He picks them all up
walks 5 miles eating 5 watermelons
now has 10 in his hands and 10 sitting at the 5 mile mark
the total is 20 watermelons and the oasis is 10 miles away

If he walks straight there with 15 watermelons he will have to eat 10 and only have 5 at the oasis. 5 will be left at the 5 mile mark uneaten

So instead he takes 5
walks 2 miles to the 7 mile mark eating 2 watermelons
drops 1 watermelon
walks back 2 miles eating 2 watermelons

There are now 15 watermelons left
picks them all up and walks to the oasis picking up the extra watermelon along the way. He arrives with 6 watermelons and none left behind.

i don't know how to do series but that is what this is

E1 = 45
En = w(watermelon count)_1-n *
(2.5*stops*(w_1-n)/15)
