I'm looking to go into a major that will combine math and science and physics. I have equal interest in all 3.

I hope to make discoveries that will pave the way for finding (or if I'm lucky I will find) new energy sources (fusion perhaps).

What should I major in?

Yes, well. You won't. You'll work in the same shit desk job like the rest of us, make slightly above average wage which will be negated by your student debt and spend the next 50 years of your life slaving away. When your children go to university you will insist; no, demand, that they do the same course you did because it served you so well. You will achieve absolutely nothing throughout your unspectacular career as this is a fact of life and if you were capable of a tenth of the things you dream of achieving you wouldn't be on /sci/ asking for advice about academia.

And the cycle will continue.

don't discourage the guy, it's true he has almost 0% chance of discovering something major by himself, however if he does go into physics and research, then he will work with a team of scientists (~20 people) and they as a team can make huge discoveries.

I know the chances of making huge discoveries are slim to none, but there are many teams of researchers out there that make small discoveries and it's those that count, they all add up, progress is slow. It's not like one day someone makes 1 huge discovery and everything is changed forever.

I've worked for years in industry, mainly with alternative energy sources and specifically diesel fuels.

I'm not saying don't go to university, but be prepared for a glorified desk job at the end of it - even with a first class degree in a top subject. You won't be given the resources or the time to discover anything new in the first 20 years of your career if you plan on going into energy.

What, you think BP (in my case) is going to pay me extra money to completely shaft their entire business base by discovering alternative energy sources?

Derp.

If you live in a country with a large manufacturing industry Physics is a good landing to have there. But really, what you study isn't *that* important. Who you know, where you went to study it and how well you did at it are much more important.

I would say major in physics. Unless you really like abstract mathematics, which you won't see as much in undergraduate physics, then you will get all of the applied math you can handle and some good theory from physics alone. If you want to get a good job, try to find something to augment your major like a specific engineering discipline or something with computers.

Remember that most universities won't make you declare a major right away, so take a few intro-level classes for specific fields to see what you like. Good luck.

But it is here supposed that, the law of the force being
given, the magnitude of the force acting at any instant depends
on the position, at that instant of the body on which it acts.
If, however, the magnitude of the force should depend not on
the position of the body at the instant of the force's action, but
on its position at some time preceding that action, the theorem
that we have stated would no longer be true. It might happen
that, every time that the body returned to the same position, its
velocity would be less than at the preceding time : in this case
the body's motion would ultimately be destroyed. On the con~
traty it might happen, that the body's velocity in any position
would be more rapid every time than the time previous. In
this case the velocity would go on perpetually increasing : or the
velocity might be made uniform if the machine were retarded
by some constantly acting resistance, or, in other words, the
machine might move with uniform velocity, and might at the
same time 'do work' which is commonly understood to be the
meaning of the term perperual motion. If the machine had no
work to do, the increasiong friction, &c. would operate as an in~
creasing work, and the velocity would be would be accelerated till the ac~
celeration caused by the forces was equal to the retardation caused
by the friction : after which it would remain unaltered.

XVI. On certain Conditions under which a Perpetual Motion is posible

By GEORGE BIDDELL AIRY, M.A.
member of the atsronomical society, fellow of trinity college, and of the
cambridge philosophical society, and plomian professor of astronomy
and experimental philosophy, in the university of cambridge

[Read Dec. 14, 1829.]

It is well known that perpetual motion is not possible with
any laws of force with which we are acquainted. The impos~
sibility depends on the integrability per se of the expression
Xdx + Ydy - Zdz and as in all the forces of which we have
an accurate knowledge this expression is a complete differential.
it follows that perpetual motion is incompatible with those forces.

people are so resistant to any realization that they are being deceived as to the nature of energy
ask yourselves, who would first need to be deceived if such a public deception was to succeed?
academic society would have to be deceived for the peversion of truth to be possible
public opinion would have to be turned to that of a 'kneejerk' reaction to laugh at any such effort, no matter how genuine or legitimate
the public media venues used to accomplish this would also have to be caused to conspire toward enhancing reports of accounts that are worthy of riducle and deminishing any knowledge at all of credible accounts

also
i personally know someone who has two of these wheels shown in the pic
both are newer designs than shown here
before they were removed from the public during the violence of the 1920s they could be found in many rual areas
google 'buzzsaw gravity wheel' or go to tineye.com for more info on it as i really cba

read what airy wrote

read the historical account of bessler

his design is simple

i wont hand it to you complete

i will tell you a few peices to compliment the existing data that may cause you to see the method for yourself (though this is highly unlikely but is entirely up to you and your apptitude for spatial perception)

his design consists of eight equal structures, each single structure has less than 12 moving parts

the 'perpetual cycle' would occure if only one of these were in place

once in motion it pulls on the spring twice each revolution but releases its stored energy only once
conversly, the weights switch places once each revolution (i.e. two revolutions of the wheel for a weight to return to its point of origin)

just fyi.. im aware of the cost of the attempt to get this under my control ( if i sell my house i might prefer to buy a boat and set sail on the pacific )

i gave a full decription to a person employed as a physicist (govt. employee; reactor inspections etc.) and was told "you really need to do something with this!!"

In 1996, Stan Meyer gave oral testimony before the court demonstrating the WFC Fuel Cell "Mode of Operability" by using the Voltage Intensifier Circuit (VIC) to produce voltage of opposite polarity to separate and disassociate the water molecule into its component gases, hydrogen & oxygen. However, the court audio sound recording equipment seemed to malfunction and was switched off. Judge Corzine said proceedings should continue without it. This was a violation of judicial protocol, since the recording system is used to verify testimony given during the trial and as such becomes "Evidence of Records." After his oral testimony, Stan expected Attorney/Judge Hurley to start bringing forth WFC witnesses and counter arguments. Instead, Attorney/Judge Hurley spoke up, stated he had to leave for a pre-planned vacation and said that there was no more testimony to be given and waived the right of the defendant to give a case summary of the WFC facts brought before the court. Stan Meyer immediately stated he would protest and Judge Corzine ended the hearing. Stan wrote a "Request to Retract" fax-letter to the Sunday Times on 2 December 1996. He attached WFC documentation on the filing with the Disciplinary Counsel. He further stated that Judge Corzine had no right to turn off the court audio sound recording equipment, nor to rule against U.S. Patents, or overrule Government and University lab reports in the public domain concerning the mode of operability of the WFC Technology. Furthermore, Stan pointed out that no US Federal "Cease and Desist" order has ever been issued against WFC since the WFC Technology has been fully legalized under US Patent Security Law 35 USC 101 and other US Federal regulatory Acts. His final statement was that "WFC is here to stay" in contradiction to the Sunday Times statement.

A Japanese venture company, Genepax, has unveiled a car on that runs on water. All it requires is a litre of water. In fact, any kind of water to be exact, whether its river, rain, sea water, or even Japanese tea. Its an electric powered car that runs solely on hydrogen dioxide.
"The main characteristic of this car is that no external input is needed. The car will continue to run as long as you have a bottle of water inside for you to add from time to time," said Kiyoshi Hirasawa, Chief Executive Officer of Genepax, after he proudly announced the company's invention.
Once water is poured into the water tank at the back of the car, the newly invented energy generator takes out the hydrogen from the water, releases electrons and finally generates electrical power.
"We highly recommend our system since it does not require you to build up an infrastructure to recharge your batteries, which is usually the case for most electric cars," said Hirasawa, who is hoping to advertise the car in time for the upcoming G8 Summit in Hokkaido, Japan.
According to the company, 1 liter of water keeps the car running for about an hour with a speed of 80 kilometers or 50 miles an hour. The company has applied for a patent and is hoping to collaborate with Japanese automobile manufacturers to mass manufacture their invention in the very near future. As fuel prices continue rising and people look for greener alternatives, companies globally are trying to come up with alternatives.

"Unfortunately," Mr. Hirasawa explained, "it does not have very good acceleration, and you do have to refill the glasses once the birds can no longer wet their beaks."

A cartoon written by someone much smarter than you., given that you can't even hold down the shift key when you type "i".

Woohoo, diamonds. Compressed carbon, not very rare, and priced high only because the debeers company has a near monopoly and good cultural marketing.
