Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Well first off I would like to verify the veracity of these polls, we tend to have a sort of faith in polls and statistics but not all equally accurate.
Secondly I would like to point out that the wording of the question is vague do you mean 1/5 of adults or 1/5 of the entire American population? Because if it's the latter there is something like 40-45 million children under the age of 10 most of which are probably not well versed in geography to say the least.

Getting back to the heart of the question I think that one of the reasons we see so much ignorance is because of the strong aura of anti-intellectualism prevalent in our society, we glorify athletes and models while looking down on more intellectual persuits.
Another reason is the poor quality of educational systems in some areas due to lack of funding, incompetence, corruption, socio-economic state of students being non conducive to learning and other factors.
