Dear /sci/,

I am considering applying to be a sperm donor at a local sperm bank. They compensate at 60 dollars a sample. I've also an interest in eventually becoming a genetic counselor myself. Has /sci/ had any experience with this, and clinical genetics / in vitro in general?
Also, general discussion thread for genetics/eugenics/reproductive technologies.

Take care,
I know for a fact that they don't allow anonymous donations in my country. If it were not for that I would have gone there already.

Just wanted to drop in and say thanks because I'm short on cash and you just reminded me of sperm donating as an option.

Also, how often will they let you donate?

>> No.3152010

Good luck getting accepted.

The regulations for sperm donors are rigorous.
And since you're on 4chan I'll assume you probably won't meet them.

Things like, average weight for your height, 5'11" - 6' 3", can't fap for a week or two before donating, etc.

Shit's rigorous, yo.

Closest thing we have to a eugenics program.

They said they expect a weekly donation, but will accept donations every 48-72 hours. Seems like a cool way to make some cash, and help out some infertile folks.

What country is that? By non-anonymous, do you mean that the couple has access to your personal contact information, and the offspring can find you? Details, man.

>> No.3152022

You must not live in America. We essentially have the opposite. Sometimes you are forced to remain anonymous. The other times you have to personally WANT to give your info out, or else they legally can't give the resultant child your info.

Assumptions are not good science.
I'm 5'11, 185 lbs. A little extra padding, but not morbidly obese. If they deny my sample because of that, I'll just lose a few pounds and reapply. I've already sent the application in, so we shall see how it goes.

Netherlands, the child can get your contact info when they're like 15-18 and want to meet you.

And people keep complaining about there not being enough sperm donations. I wonder why.

>> No.3152043

>>3152033

Not assumptions, just probability.

But anyway, I'll also assume you are healthy as a horse (not asthma, constant nosebleeds, only ever taken aspirin, etc.) And you have no history of any type of disease in your family.

If not, you won't get accepted.

Trust me, there is no shortage of sperm, they only want the creme de la creme.

As far as in-vitro experience, I am an in-vitro. I was manufactured back in the day before they screened for implantation viability genes. They just threw three of me into mom's uterus and we had thunderdome in there. Mom did have karyotyping done though.

I've met my fertility doctor and I'm always proud to point out "where I was conceived" to the horror of my friends thinking my parents banged in the hospital.

I know a MD/PhD student whose mom was one of the pioneers in reproductive immunology. We have a plan for me to (eventually) invest in, help her patent, and market a new genetic screen panel for implantation viability among other marketable fertility products.

Yeah, I'm pretty healthy, no chronic disorders or history of disease. My grandma had skin cancer, but she was also an irishwoman living in Arizona.

My new question for those in the know; How viable is lying on the survey? What do they test for in sperm samples?

Well. The ultimate goal is full embryo selective. A significant portion of the mother's eggs are endoscopically harvested and meiosis is induced. The eggs are then all fertilized and allowed to grow until there's enough material for sampling and they're viable for storage. We sample all eggs, store them while the test panel is done, then discard the flawed eggs. Even the most genetically flawed couple will likely produce (if they could naturally use most of a mother's eggs) at least a few "perfect" offspring. We're just accomplishing what nature can't. The idea is to patent the process and test panels involved and license the technology/techniques.
Her mother has a few ideas but she's getting closer and closer to retirement. Her mother's lab is currently living off of grants and the work of a few dedicated MD/PhD's who have to juggle research and practice. When/if my business gets enough money, I plan to acquire her lab and start making a profit from this research.

Beyond that, there's research into improving the viability of implanted embryos, hormonal therapies/techniques to improve the ability of an otherwise infertile endometrium to accept zygotes.

Beyond even that, there is the potential to tweak the immune system of a child while it's still gestating in the immunological fortress that is the womb. This wouldn't require germ-line engineering, merely treatments/therapies beginning at the 7 week or so point. Imagine humans born without genetic disease, with super-competent immune systems, and no defects. These aren't superman abominations, they're just humans that have undergone a process to ensure that they reach their greatest biological potential.

So no phenotypical selection.

Because I'm getting closer and closer to having babby, and I want green eyes in one kid and blue in the other.

>> No.3152233

>>3152221
Aside from the nebulous genetics behind eye color, there are "moral considerations" to be taken into account when discussing phenotypic selection.

If the techniques exist, I'm certain that you can find a doctor that's willing to do it... somewhere.

The potential for abuse is simply too high and I will not enable a potential sex gap. Sex is not a defect to be corrected, be happy with your child's gender.

>mfw you reveal your true luddite face and are not ready for the inevitable predominance of designer babbies

>> No.3152319

>>3152296
I'm far from a luddite, it's just that the potential for abuse is so great. The problems wouldn't be in the west, but imagine the problems in places like India, China, Bangladesh, Laos, Pakistan, and much of the middle east if/when reliable sex selection technology becomes available.

The gender gap in China is already a looming problem with numerous potential difficulties stemming therefrom. I have no problem with "designer babies" when they're truly possible. This even includes germ-line engineering, again when it's feasible for use.

Again though, a human's sex isn't a defect to be corrected. I'm sure you lament when a party is a sausage fest. Would you lament when entire nations are sausage-fests?

>> No.3152330

I hope your sperm isn't going to deliberate single mothers. Those parasitic cunts need no support in their effort to destroy society.

>> No.3152343

>>3152319

That would never happen though. Nature wouldn't allow.

Not just mother nature, but human nature. As the male population increases females will literally become more valuable. Then people will seize this opportunity, and shit will balance out again.

lrn2dynamic equilibrium

>> No.3152373

>>3152343
Fair enough but in the meantime while we're waiting for equilibrium to settle in we're just meant to deal with the problems created by a gender gap while the female babies grow up?

Let's not forget that selective abortion is still rampant in India and China. Basic technology to identify the sex of a gestating fetus is available and selective abortion is banned... but it still happens. We have yet to see the uptick in female births and the problems of the gender gap are looming.

I doubt there is ANY place where you can make fully anonymous sperm donations. The bank knows who the hell you are, and they have records and tests, even if they don't release that information to those who receive/use your donations.

Because there's even one country currently on this planet that is known to selectively abort male fetuses.

Who knows? Maybe "flipping the coin" when it comes to sex might be a good idea in a species that reproduces sexually. What do I know though, maybe I'm just a traditionalist luddite with primitive concepts like "a 50/50 sex ratio is desirable" embedded in my brain.

we have sperm banks.. we have egg banks.. why is there a lack of embryos to play with. test tube babies were done in the late 90s.. the abortion shit can wait.. but srsly just make em embryos.
