Biology general up in this bitch
ITT we discuss random biology shit and prove that biology is the best science

Well to get the ball rolling just applied to do my masters in bio mother fuckers anyone want to give me any cool suggestions as to what to do my thesis on :) best I've come up with is 'The Phylogeny of Water Bears (Hypsibius- gonna stop at genus me thinks)'

If a cell had a cell cycle of 4h 18 minutes how long (in minutes) would it take for the cell to divide into 8 cells?

I think you don't take into account each cells division rather you just multiply the time it takes for the original cell to divide 8 times?

If you want a fun thesis, do some kind of evolutionary biology. I worked with boatloads of guppies. Before that, I worked with a PhD student as her lab bitch with a ton of newts. Maybe it's just my love of fish, reptiles, and amphibians talking but you should do some kind of genetics and evolution experiment.

Idea: Compare monitor lizard feeding behaviors to their genetics for venom production. Is the "scraping" behavior associated with smaller monitors to compensate for lack of venom/septic bacteria or does it occur in species with more significant expression of the venomous phenotype? Compare this with larger species that exhibit the "evisceration and picking" behavior and have greater levels of venomous phenotypic expression.

Wild guppies from Trinidad versus various strains of "designer" guppies that have been in-bred in captivity for a long time. We took genetic samples from them to the genomics people to calculate divergence and tried to correlate divergence from wild type with defensive behaviors against various predatory stimuli.

Pike cichlid (their natural predator) models, cichlid urea, both were introduced and their various defensive/anti-predation behaviors were recorded into a program. The data from this program was contrasted with the genomics data.

What's so wrong with that? I SCUBA dive too. I still catalog every fungus I can find while hiking.

Are you lamenting my departure from the sciences? Don't worry man, I fully intend to return someday. If the business works out, I'm finishing my law degree and signing up to get a masters in molecular genetics. After that, I fully intend to become a part time student of... almost everything. I want to finish/polish up my Arabic, properly study astronomy, start a genetic testing outsourcing company (everything from sequencing to simple southern blots) if I have the money, actually study physics beyond the 10 credit hours I did in college, and hopefully live my dream.

I want to buy a yacht and sail around scuba diving and collecting marine fungi samples, which are largely unstudied. I want to sequence their genomes and run that data through a proteonomics program. Maybe I'll find something useful, maybe I'll just indulge my vanity and name a species or two after myself, or maybe I'll find nothing but I'll still be happy.
