might sound stupid but...

when you throw a ball in space it will fly infinitely.
so.. doesn't this fuck thermodynamics in some way?

I mean, eventually some troll science machine would work under such conditions..

>> No.3097943

Newton's first law.

Google it.

>> No.3097961

It will fly around until gravity draws it to the center of a mass or friction on particles will slow it down.

>> No.3098074

>>3097961
ok but that sounds like quite some distance, and it wouldn't require much energy to make it fly

>> No.3098081

>>3098074
Conservation of momentum and energy. There is no problem here.

If you try to extract energy from objects in motion in space, they will slow down.

>> No.3098098

So you're saying we should build a giant sphere in space, throw some balls in there, and hook up a generator to them, and because there's no friction to slow the balls downs we get infinite energy?

I like it.

>> No.3098106

>>3098098
Except your idea violates conservation of energy. It won't work.

Yea it will. No friction in space.

Removing a source of losses =/= free energy. You're just improving efficiency a little.

>> No.3098122

>>3098114
What? There's no friction in space = they go forever, or at least a very very long time, enough to give us enough energy for a lifetime.

>> No.3098126

No, it doesn't break thermodynamics.

>> No.3098128

>>3097935

A ball will move forever in a perfect vacuum. Space is not a perfect vacuum, aside form the large bodies, there are still some particles in space, eventually the ball would slow down and stop.

But yeah, that's how spacecraft work, you only bring enough fuel to maneuver and stop, but as soon as your ship is at its maximum speed you just cruise along until you get to the moon or Mars or wherever you are going.

>> No.3098130

>>3098122

As soon as you hook a generator onto something you have just produced a shitload of friction.

Derp. A generator has no space. It will waste energy as friction in the creation of energy.

>a generator has no space

I don't see what that has to do with anything? Look, if you put a ball in space, there's no friction to stop it. If you put a generator in space, same thing. What are you even arguing??

>>3098179
I'm not even trolling, I don't understand what this guy is on about.

>> No.3098211

>>3098189
You clearly don't know how a generator works...

Generators usually turn momentum into electrical eneryg through induction which will slow the balls down even if there is no air-resistance or gravity to slow the balls down

>> No.3098212

>>3098144

Objects in space stay in motion because:
1: There is no air resistance in space to slow movement.
2: The objects are far enough away from massive planets/stars etc. to not be pulled to them. Though eventually an object moving through space will hit something or move close enough to get caught by the gravitation pull.

An object shot or thrown in space only has a certain amount of energy. A generator would apply resistance and stop the object while collecting the energy. Friction exists in space but between objects. When people say there is no friction in space they only mean there's no air resistance.

>> No.3098215

>>3098189
so ball has no friction in space, so what? whats your next step?

>> No.3098222

>>3098211
Well, of course the balls will stop sometime. It's not fucking perpetual motion. But it's going to last almost forever. There's no air resistance or friction or anything to slow them down, the generator isn't going to slow them down that much like it would on earth.

>> No.3098223

An idea like this has been suggested before. You could, theoretically, create a dynamo using superconducting materials, and start it running in a vacuum. The lack of friction and electrical resistance would give it fairly impressive efficiency, but it still wouldn't make free energy. The act of siphoning power from it would slow down the dynamo.

>> No.3098220

I can't tell if this thread is serious or just trolling.

For the guy who says no friction in space so infinite energy, give me a theoretical generator and how you would work it from the infinitely rolling balls (ie how would you extract energy from the balls).

>> No.3098234

i heard once about a metal ring which had current going in it constantly can anyone help me remember

>> No.3098244

>>3098222
Yes, its true that if you did the same setup it would slow down a lot faster on earth but as it has already been pointed out a billion times. The conservation of energy states that we can not create nor destroy energy.

This means that we will be able to "extract"all of the kinetic (movement) energy into electrical energy but it is still a finite amount and does NOT exced the enegry used to launch the balls or objects into space.
