An extinct animal has been resurrected by cloning for the first time—though the clone died minutes after birth.

"The public should not leap to the conclusion that we are on the edge of cloning woolly mammoths or dinosaurs," he said. "Even if such embryos could be constructed, there are no appropriate surrogate mothers for long-dead species."

I am also disappoint.

The writer has apparently never heard of an elephant.

In fact, there are many cases of species that are extinct but have surviving close relatives. Dinosaurs may be off limits (for more than just this reason as we don't have good DNA for non-avian dinosaurs) but what about Honshu wolves, Cuban red macaws, Carolina Parkeets, etc.

I think I'd be pretty satisfied just to "undo" the holocene extinctions.

In all seriousness, I wonder what you could charge for a hunting license in "Pleistocene" park.

It's $500k for a woolly mammoth, $350k for a sabertooth, and a mere $30k for a dodo.

Can we pretty PLEASE unleash the American lion and terror bird near major population centers? Our gene pools need some shaking up.

Seriously, I wanna see more recent extinctions 'undone', like the Passenger Pigeon (apparently too delicious to survive naturally) and tha Tasmanian Wolf.
Dodo as well, just to study the goofy fuckers.
Also, Javan Tigers.
We should feel cheated that we can't currently see these creatures while only a few generations ago you could.

I think it would be LOL if the "Holocene extinction event" was followed by a "Holocene un-extinction event."
