'sup /sci/.

In class we've been learning about gain circles on the smith chart for microwave transistors. There's a fair amount of math lurking in the background of the derivation. From what I follow bilinear transformations, transforming circles in the z = r+jx plane into the w = u + jv plane, this allows us to map impedances to reflection coefficients which in turn allows us to get maximum power gain.

My professor said that complex analysis was necessary to understand the heart of the transformations.

What's the path to learn Complex Analysis?
I've taken the basic calc, linear algebra, and differential equations. Nothing further.

I know self study of difficult topics is well ... difficult, but I'd like to know where to start.

just learn complex variables. all you need is linear algebra.

complex analysis (w/ reals) is too much i think.

Okay, never learned complex variables specifically. Is there a more rigorous treatment of linear algebra or something? What would that be called?

You're gonna want to look into real analysis first, preferably take a class on it, because you learn how real numbers and related functions and graphs work. Basically the main point is to learn how real numbers are created from rational numbers. It's recommended because you work with functions you already know well. Then you can look in the more complicated stuff such as complex analysis/variables and number theory, which works in imaginary numbers into the theories.

Btw, the graph on the right is a holomorphic function, which I believe is infinently differentiable. You learn more about those if you focus on complex analyses.

I'm guessing in you're in some power/electric engineering class?

Yeah EE, specifically RF, Microwave, and mm-wave systems, basically high frequency designs.

Cool, I shall start with the reals then. Do you think I can jump right into Real Analysis given my background or is there more prereqs?

As long as you've done at least single integrals and infinite series and sequences there should be no problem.
