So /sci/, what's the deal with these lightbulbs?

There are 2 in my ceiling, about 6-8 feet fro me. Am I going to get cancer?

Well, I was a bit hungry and the only thing in the fridge was ketchup and some old cheese.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

So this is just more of that "everything causes cancer" shit?

Are you guys sure it's nonsense? I mean, I know what it looks like, but I feel like I'd rather be safe than sorry. And with cancer.

they stopped putting mercury in thermometers because people kept breaking them in their assholes. if you think you might have a problem with not breaking that light bulb inside of an orifice you might have a problem, but otherwise you'll be fine. the only danger is consumption of the constituent pieces

Ok, I love these things because they save money, don't burn you, last forever, and the light looks a lot better, BUT.
I once turned one on and it blew every breaker in the house and burst into an intense blue flame which melted my lamp before exploding and almost setting my carpet on fire.

It was metal as fuck I must admit

And the entire anti-compact flouriest Jihad is a huge steaming pile of shit. You're not going to eat them or horde thousands of them into a mass orgy so you can break them and dump a thimble's worth of mercury into the environment

It's actually been estimated that the amount of mercury in a CFL is less than the reduction in the amount of mercury emitted by coal power plants as a result of the bulb's decreased electrical needs.

<- Superior lighting apparatus

However these need a heat-conductive mounting point, rather than the insulated sockets that most people have which keep incandescent bulbs from burning their house down.

The main problem with CFLs is disposal. They must be recycled properly in order to prevent environmental contamination. Counting on the populace to fulfill this obligation to a high degree demonstrates a profound misunderstanding of human behavior. The vast majority of CFLs (and their mercury) wind up with the regular trash.

Banning incandescent bulbs was a stupid idea anyway. It used to be enough to have my desk lamp on to heat my small room. Now with CFLs, I need to use a heater of significantly more power which provides no light at all.

I've only had two break on me in 6 years, but I'd like to keep them out of the garbage without having to run down to medical supply recycler.
