Why isn't silicon called silicium in English? For the vast majority of elements you've kept the Latin name, what gives? I mad since I always have to pause to remember the English names for silicon, sodium, potassium etc.

>> No.3045046

Most of the elements use the Greek name, not the Latin one.

I've never heard anyone say silicium when talking about silicon, and even as I type this, my computer is registering silicium as a word that doesn't exist in the dictionary.

Firefox's dictionary is a bit inept, though.

It would help if you spelt things correctly

Yeah, I meant to type "colour" but auto-corrected it with Firefox without meaning to.

Goddammit, Firefox.

Same reason we say Iron, Lead, and Tin instead of Ferrum, Plumbum, and Stannum

Plumbum is a fucking awesome word.

From here on out I plan to use plumbum as often as possible.

"Pottasium"? "Sodium"? TUNGSTEN? It's called Wolfram, English dogs.

Yes, human languages are redundant. This is a feature, not a bug. It makes it easy to understand even if you mishear a word or don't know a word.

>> No.3045305

>>3045193
What is redundant about it?
"you do" does not mean the same thing as "you already do" or "you kind of do" or "you kind of already do"

All of those sentences have different meanings.

The original poster is just a moronic douchebag.
Also, filling your sentences with redundant words does not mean you are smart.

>> No.3045394

>>3045332
To say something would suffice and that something is redundant are two different things.

Regardless of if you believe he used too many words, what he said was not redundant because the additional words changed the meaning of the sentence.

"already" means "you may not have realized it but"

"kind of" means "it isn't exactly the same as that but"

"You do even though you may not have realized it and even though it isn't exactly the same." is not the same as saying "You do"
