Organic chemistry is an art. you cannot learn to do it well.

it is a talent. you can excercise and build your talent, but you cannot "learn" the talent.

as with all arts, there are tools of the trade (which includes knowledge of modern chemistries), but that does not change the fact that it is an art.

in the parlance of an engineer, organic chemistry is the type of field where the shit that happens is often called

"magic"

I should clarify: if you were never very good at O-chem, you learned it and memorized the reactions, know how to write a mechanism down, and you can follow your lab manual correctly...

it would be absolute folly to try to get a Ph.D. in O-chem.

true Organic chemists are born that way.

yeah. Organic chemistry is the track that the MOST "math-phobic" people take.

chemistry, in general, is a science that people (undergrads) take because they consider it to be a nice, technical, moderately high paying field, but that does not require significant mathematics.

its true, that in comparison to physics and engineering, there is less math from an educational standpoint...

but some people cannot handle even that small amount of math (basically just simple calculus)...

those people go and get their Ph.D. in organic chemistry

I had heard that going into chemistry is becoming a good idea right now because it's not very popular. Specifically that it's easy to get into a graduate program. Fact or fiction?

the fridge in our old lab looked like this. full of crap. and every time you opened it you could smell various chemicals, which were probably all terribly toxic.

we had a kilogram of AIBN (Azobisisobutyronitrile, which is explosive) and 2 liters of 60% H2O2.

most of the rest were various self-made intermediates in schlenk flasks or septump sealed flasks.

yeah its pretty easy to get into chemistry graduate school.

if you have good letters of recommendation (the most important part after grades), you should have no trouble getting in anywhere except the usual top schools:

UCB, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, CalTech, Scripps, UIUC, UoC, and probably also UCLA. Probably also University of Maryland and University of NC, Chapel Hill.

those are most of the top 20 universities in the US...

even with a 3.0 GPA, average letters of recomendation, 700 on the GRE you should be able to get into something rated between top 70 and top 40 (based on the US news ranking)
