Aight, /sci/entists, let's get some chemistry up in this bitch.

ITT: Home labs. Pic related, it's from a benzoic acid synthesis I did a while ago in my basement lab.

Yeah I try and do most of my chemistry around fume hoods and fire extinguishers but hey, what do I know?

This.

Home labs sound cool until someone pays you to use a real lab.

God damn that looks like a meth lab.
Enjoy your meth OP.

I don't see how this synthesis could pose any fire or inhalation hazard. There's a buttload of chemistry that can be done safely without a fume hood.

>Implying I *synthesize* cocaine

Drugs are bad, mkay? Only reason I have a lab is because chemistry is a fucking sweet hobby.

I'm actually interested in hobbyist chemistry like this OP.

What kind of chemical background do you have? What kind of things do you make? Where do you personally acquire the apparatus/reagents?

I'm a high school senior. I get my stuff from companies that sell to schools and research institutions, plus my open-handed teacher.

I'm not in the US, where getting stuff can be much harder because of the WoD which is creating chemophobia and making lifes harder for hobby chemists. Add that to the fact that >50% of the US population is severely retarded.

Alright. I'll have to look into the supply regulations in the UK. I do have reasonably good access to apparatus, however.

What's it like for a beginner? Last time I was doing organic chemistry was 3 years ago in A-levels. Any decent resources you could recomend for setting up and self teaching?

http://lpchemicals.com/ is UK based and legit. For self-teaching I recommend some books to brush up on your theoretical skills. Sciencemadness.org is an amateur chemistry society with a high standard where you can get advice and download book scans, papers etc. UK eBay is awesome for getting used quality apparatus.

nice thread op

But may i ask a question - what exactly do you do with any halogenated waste you have? How do you go about disposing of it?
Also, what other synthises have you performed? Regail us :)

I know exactly what you mean. That's a big concern of mine too if I start this up as a hobby. More than likely at some point I'd have a stab at making something illicit if I became competent enough.

My point was that you're quite possibly already on a government database. If there's one thing governments are great at doing in the free world it's keeping track of it's population. Could be that debit card payment you made when you bought a packet of blunts, could be the time you signed up to a pro-wikileaks petition or maybe the time you attended that march against the war.

This is tin-hatting to a degree. I'm just very cynical of governments at times. And the ease at which information can be categorised and shared with digitalisation behind closed doors is quite striking.

Nice to hear :)

The only halogenated solvent I use is dichloromethane, and I recycle most of it. Tiny amounts go down the drain. Other halogenated organic compounds are used in synthesis, where the halogen is expelled as an inorganic compound, as in methylations with methyl iodide. I also have half a liter carbon tetrachloride that I haven't opened yet.

Most of my work isn't extremely exciting. I've made various esters, like methyl and ethyl benzoate (ethyl benzoate has a wonderful smell of fresh evergreen and a strong mint). Much of the syntheses I do revolve around alcohols, from cyclohexanol I make cyclohexanone and cyclohexene, which can be used further to make more compounds such as bromocyclohexane and cyclohexylamine. Methanol, ethanol, n-butanol and t-butanol yields the bromides/iodides from treatment with HBr/HI.

Pic related, it's the synthesis of bromine from sodium bromide, sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen bromide is formed in situ and peroxide oxidizes the bromide to bromine. Synth was done in the school lab in a fume hood. The apparatus is school property, but I own a similar set of ground glassware.

Ahh i see :) I was looking for a decent side project over the summer and i'd like to try coming up with a good perfume or soap or something (any other suggestions?)

Esters are always touted as having very vibrant smells, and that they do, but i distinctly remember making some long chain aldehydes that were equally as pleasant.

There's a good list or two on a few esters and what they smell like e.g.

isoamyl acetate smells like banana - and ethyl phenylacetate like honey.

I don't know if anyone here has much experience with this sort of thing, but how chemically stable would a mixture of esters in an alcohol/water solution be - if left in sunlight etc? Just out of curiosity.

Cheap glassware. Where do i get? Plastic bags, cups, and spoons are getting old. And cutting the top off of a can to put on a wafflemaker takes a long time to evaporate things.
