I did that. didnt work.... had a schlenk tube of pristine distilled N-vinylpyrrolidone one day stored in the fridge...

used a dry hamilton syringe, degassed with Ar (in/out line on schlenk tube septum, pull plunger in/out about 50 times to purge it).

3 layers of foil, covering the entire thing (the septum on the top, and the arm of the schlenk line, even the valve).


3 weeks later its a solid plug of plastic that doesnt dissolve in anything.

not refluxing DMSO/DMF, not boiling water, not refluxing toluene.

they should make nuclear reactors out of this shit.

besides, duo-seals are ridiculously reliable. even the most fucked up abused pumps need only have their seals and oil replaced to be in 100% brand new condition.

those electronic Buchi pumps they use with the vacuum controllers on nice Rotavaps are another story.


Oil diffiusion pumps as well are easily damaged, but they are usually protected by ANOTHER vacuum pump connected in-line.
