I was wondering; are math and logic skills something you have to be born with, or can it be developed just as well by pretty much anyone if they work hard enough at it?

>> No.2955691

They are definitely skills which need to be developed to function at a high level, and anyone of normal functioning should be able to raise them to a certain standard.

There are almost certainly also biological components, just like everything else.

It is true that some people are born with larger regions geared toward math.

BUT: When it comes to the brain, nothing is absolutely static. It exhibits more plasticity than any other part of our body. How do we change it to make ourselves smarter? The classic theory is practice. Thousands and thousands of hours of practice. Maybe there will come a sure-fire way to speed it up.

>> No.2955967

It's definitely influenced by both, but I genuinely think it's something you're born good at.

Personally I love complex science and reasoning but I have a math-specific learning disability that's actually been diagnosed. My brain is particularly bad at recalling "meaningless" things like numbers, learning the times tables was the most challenging thing for me. On the other hand, I can remember any word or pretty much anything else really well, but for some reason my brain cannot process even basic math, despite years of struggling, tutors, special attention and going to good schools. I always wish I could do math, because then it would be so much easier to do the science I love, but despite trying so hard I am still at basically a children's level at math.

Ever tried higher level math?

Barely any memorization there.

I fucking love real analysis, but hate and suck at basic math.
I don't even know my times tables.

Who uses j instead of i ? Is that a cultural/country thing or is it like the ln vs log split that occurs at higher levels of math and science?

it's kinda funny that it's a genius saying that.

The truth is that people who ask this question don't know what math is. It's kind of like asking "Does one have to be at the skill level of Rembrandt to be able to paint pictures?"

the guy is obviously immensly gifted, even more surprising is how humble he is.

Was Terry Tao born that way? Or did his brain become that way after doing math as a very young child?

>> No.2957370

People get buttfrustrated with math and assume that anyone who can do it must be a genius. Good for me, I guess.

>> No.2957379

>>2957329

This is because of the way math is taught in our schools.

/r/ the link to that thoughtful essay on math education I saw posted here a few days ago?
