Hey, /sci/. First-time poster here. Anyways, I have to ask something before officially changing my major: How viable is the job market to someone with a degree in Mathematics? I am currently a Physics major, but thanks to legislation passed by my state, my school is being forced to drop that degree path.

Can a Mathematics undergraduate degree be used to get into an engineering graduate program? Would I be better off getting a degree in something like Mathematical Sciences?

The job-market question applies to both an undergraduate degree, as well as a graduate degree.

I heard Mathematics can be a well-paying job, too. Is this true?

Time to change schools bro. I'm not one of those "physics > everything" fags but if your school is dropping a core science something is seriously fucked up.

dunno about 300k starting, but you can definitely make that in a little while if you go into economics with a math Ph.D.

Oh, I whole-heartedly agree. Yet, we have less than eight graduates a year for the degree, and the state thought it wasn't adequate enough, so they nuked it. We lost a bunch of other courses, too.

Prospects are the same for both Mathematicians and Physicists. Any job that requires high numerate skills aren't going to differentiate between them.

If you are applying for finance you'll need to demonstrate that you can communicate and work in a team moreso than a degree such as Economics or Business Studies. There's a stereotype that mathematicians and physicists can be social recluses and don't adapt well to work.

Well, I'm certain this has been a bit eye-opening. I'll do further research on my own, as well. Thank you.
