the 4th dimension isnt the time dimension.
Imagine you are useing a 3D design application. You have created an objet at a determinate scale in a particular coordinate system. Imagine you grab the scaling tool and changes the scale of the objet, you can changue the size but not the system of coordinates. So, well, the movement of the objet along the scale values and direction, is the 4th dimension as we know in the geometric spacial dimensions. In our 3 dimensional world, we only can see or notice one of these values of the scale at a time. pic somehow related.
(the more you know...)

It's more like, time is not the 4th spatial dimension, or a dimension independent of the 3 euclidian dimensions at all.

You can treat time as a sort of meta dimension, and call it #4, but you can't make a tesseract that goes time-ways.

no, but time is A 4th dimension, there is no THE 4th dimension

>A 4th dimension
That's implying that more than one dimension (other than the first three, I assume) can be the fourth dimension, so why can't they be definitely named / numbered like the first three?

>> No.2935585

usually when you speak of 4th dimension, unless explicitly stated, I consider it to be referring to a 4th direction of movement,

I've always thought of dimensions as actually being pairs of 2 "dimensions", forwards and backwards, up and down, left and right, and that there are actually 3 pairs of scalar spatial dimensions and a singular dimension of time.

This perspective helps you to understand general relativity, imagine a distance=-(time-1)²+1 graph, this is easy to understand, someone throws a ball and it follows a parabola. Now swap distance and time, d=√(1-t)+1, the event horizon is the equivalent of the ball after t=1, it only exists if you assume √(-1) is 1, or in practical terms if you assume it is going backwards in time, just in a different location (like inside a black hole) even though the rest of the universe continues to go forwards in time. What you have done here is make time scalar allowing the ball to go backwards in time.

not true

in a tesseract (object shown in your picture) all line segments are of equal length and all angles are 90 degrees

>the fourth dimension is the ability to distinguish multiple 3d environments in real time by recognizing the gradient differences in between much like you notice a ball roll.
