Is there an easy way of understanding the (simply connected) universal cover of a Lie group?

I find the example of "R x SU(n) is the universal cover of U(n)" to be distrbing. Does it always try to factor like that?

I mean give me some intuition on their struture.

Way too advanced for 99.9% of /sci/

also try <span class="math"> tags and latex to make your notation clearer if you want people to easily understand the problem and therefore be more likely to post about it.[/spoiler]
