>Since Governor Snyder took office, Michigan has been subjected to Draconian measures like the Emergency Financial Manager who just took over Benton Harbor, Michigan, stripping elected officials of any power but calling meetings open and closed or the EFM who just laid off every single public school teacher in Detroit (a move akin to kicking the dog). Teachers across the state are being kicked as a part of Snyder’s “market rate” “business approach” to the very real fiscal challenges facing Michigan. In one example of this, in the middle of attempting to negotiate a contract, a full time professor at Central Michigan University became eligible for food stamps.

Why do conservatives hate education?

>> No.2906477

I wonder how big his salary is....
Cutting politician's salaries and benefits would be much more profitable than cutting education

>> No.2906486

I would answer that question gladly, if you would first please explain why it is that government must use taxes to supply and manage education at all.

Also explain the need for food stamps too, while you're at it. (liberal wealth redistribution is a bitch when it's not flowing yer direction, huh?)

They believe that religion is the only thing keeping the world working. No really, they do. They think that science and evolution in particular leads to naturalism and the rejection of the .. super-natural. And thus far they're right.

They think that rejection of the supernatural and the embrace of naturalism will turn everyone into nihilistic Nazi rapers and killers. No really. This is what they actually think, in their own words no less. I'm not even exaggerating with the Nazi thing. See Ben Stein's views on the subject - a person largely responsible for "Expelled - No Intelligence Allowed".

Two possible approaches to make.

First could argue that free markets do a shitty job for education. I won't make that here because I'm not even sure if it's true.

The second is the much more important thing. The entire concept of a democratic republic, or any other form of government with elements of democracy, /require/ an educated and well informed citizenry. Without a well informed citizenry, you might as well be rolling dice, or just listening to the demagogues. Public education is required for a democractic republic to function.

The Washington D.C's teacher's union was offered an option to DOUBLE THEIR SALARY if they took tenure off the table. They kept tenure.

Unfortunate. I generally am a fan of free markets where it works, and not the biggest fan of union protection of shitty workers.

Because without an educated populace, democracy doesn't work at ALL. In addition, I think we can all be pretty damn sure that if the rich aren't willing to pay as much in taxes as the poor, they're sure as shit not willing to privately fund education for all the nation's children.

So am I, but with the growing blatant greed of the wealthy, the list of places where the free market can be trusted is shrinking.

Oh yes, "naturalism". As in, it's natural to have sex with a goat or your neighbor's 5-year old son. And it's also natural to kill your neighbor and steal his stuff.

Hey, you moral relativists can rape and pillage as much as you want, but don't complain to me when you end becoming Bubba's love slave in Pelican Bay.

>> No.2906544

Just stopping people from buying stolen goods, I don't see the problem. But seriously, there are things that are better to cut first (military spending, foreign aid, war on drugs, war on gambling, war on business etc).

American "teachers" are just morons who underperformed in colleges and have no other career options. We are some of the highest spenders when it comes to education and yet we always fall behind the rest of the world...
America should emulate Finland and make it tougher to become a teacher whilst simultaneously increasing pay & benefits to compensate.

No. The quote was, "They think that rejection of the supernatural and the embrace of naturalism will turn everyone into nihilistic Nazi rapers and killers."

Naturalism was used as an opposing viewpoint to believing in supernatural things.

Goddamn, I knew professor salaries sucked, but I thought it was just relative to the amount of education. I thought associate profs. got around $50k/year, assistant profs. got around $70k/year, and full profs. got around $100k/year.

But holy shit, $24,000/year? Fuck that. I hope it's just because the people they were talking about were non-tenure track humanities lecturers at low-tier public universities.

> a full time professor at Central Michigan University became eligible for food stamps.

So one guy qualifies for food stamps and suddenly OH NO POOR TEACHERS REPUBLICANS HATE EDUCATION?

Fuck that. Teachers in this country are scum, using their powerful unions to extort pay and conditions far beyond what their effort deserves and to protect incomplete and criminal teachers from losing their jobs, all in the name of 'caring about education'. Teachers do not have the interests of children at heart, but they've managed to trick us all into thinking their interests coincide naturally with those of our kids. Protip: They don't.

Sage for partisan bullshit, keep this shit off /sci/
