Hey, /sci/. I've never really understood what computer science is. What exactly do computer scientists do? These are the people writing new coding languages, right? But aside from that, what else are they doing?

Also, what are some good resources on the subject? I'd like to learn a little bit about it.

>> No.2900860

>Computer science or computing science (abbreviated CS) is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and of practical techniques for their implementation and application in computer systems. Computer scientists invent algorithmic processes that create, describe, and transform information and formulate suitable abstractions to model complex systems.

>Computer science has many sub-fields; some, such as computational complexity theory, study the properties of computational problems, while others, such as computer graphics, emphasize the computation of specific results. Still others focus on the challenges in implementing computations. For example, programming language theory studies approaches to describe computations, while computer programming applies specific programming languages to solve specific computational problems, and human-computer interaction focuses on the challenges in making computers and computations useful, usable, and universally accessible to humans.

Google is so hard.

They find ways for computers to solve problems in the most efficient way basically
Like finding new ways to find data in databases, artificial intelligence, new encryption, ways for computer to interact with humans more efficiently (like understanding speech, making compilers and other goodies like perfecting pseudo-random generators
Computability theory is a branch of mathematics that deals with what is able to be computed in the first place

>> No.2900893

Computer science:
A four-year program wrought with stress leading to a piece of paper that certifies you as a permavirgin.

>> No.2900887

Computer science is learning the algorithms, structures, and math (but I repeat myself) to understand what computers do, what they can do, and a broad set of approaches to get them to do what you want.

It involves a lot of programming, typically in one core language like Java or C++, with specialties in many other languages and non-languages (such as Finite State Machines). You learn things like object-oriented programming, parallelization, artificial intelligence, efficient vs. inefficient algorithms, 3d graphics... and a lot of math, including advanced calculus.

it is different from say, software engineering or EE/software because it is more theoretical and speculative, while engineering is more practical.

It is different from say, learning to write Visual Basic because Visual Basic is a chump language.

It is different than "doing websites" because websites are not coded, they are simply marked-up (well, interactive websites do take some coding, but it typically happens in parts you don't see.)

It's different from MIS because MIS is for chumps who can't hack a Comp Sci major and wind up replacing hard drives and troubleshooting VPNs for the Comp Sci majors that are actually writing the code. Unless the MIS majors luck out, in which case they are either a C-level executive and/or managing (poorly) the CS chump who the manager sees (wrongly) as a simple code monkey, rather than a well-educated, creative problem solver.

Hope that helps.

Computer Science (CS) is a discipline that involves the design and development of computing systems applications and their effective deployment and use. It ranges from theoretical studies of algorithms to practical problems of system implementation involving both software and hardware. The breadth of computer science is all encompassing. It is an interdisciplinary field with roots in mathematics and engineering and applications in many diverse areas. Programming is but one aspect of computer science. Computer scientists work to solve multifaceted problems. Some may be solving problems with engineers or managers in design and implementation projects, while others may be involved in research and development of systems for science and medicine. Computer Science provides excellent training in problem solving and logical thinking, which are important skills for employment and research.

That's not fair to say. You can find something difficult and work hard to learn the material. Struggling is part of the learning process. A lot of people seem to think that you have to understand everything the first time it's presented to them. It doesn't work that way for most people, and I doubt you breezed so easily through whatever math you took.

nope sorry if you cant do calc 2 you literally will not be able to do anything science related ever because that's where you learn about integrals and those ever go away ever
