So I've been playing a lot of games recently that reference the apocalypse (with good reason- it makes for a great game storyline). It occurs to me that in each game, the remnants of humanity tend to run the gamut between utter idiots and paragons of scientific knowledge. Thus, I think it'd be interesting to prepare now for potential apocalypses- not just to survive, as survival manuals teach, but to thrive, with the combined weight of the modern pre-apocalyptic scientific community behind us.
To that end, does anyone know of any good sources that catalogue combinations of survival knowledge with important scientific discoveries that would be integral to mankind getting back on their feet after an apocalyptic event?

TL;DR: Either look for compilations of scientific data relevant to apocalyptic survival and thriving, or contribute tidbits from your own knowledge.

Don't cannibalize. It might keep you full, but it causes prion diseases and there's no way to treat those. Kuru is a nasty thing.

Weaponry and preserved food are better investments than gold in a true SHTF.

Don't trust anyone who doesn't stand as much to lose as you do if you were to be betrayed.

This is a good start, though the latter two are more logic based than anything else. If anyone is curious of my specific inspiration, it is the Fallout series. While these games obviously don't depict real life apocalyptic scenarios, it got me thinking- simple things like repairing simple electronics would become an important commodity. Understanding basic chemical reactions, and other chemical and biological knowledge would be incredibly useful, in the short and long term. And of course, first aid and medical knowledge would make you utterly invaluable. These are the sort of things I'd enjoy seeing put here.

anybody up to making a website and then getting shit together?

This was actually what I was hoping. We see countless cases where simple knowledge like crop rotation can save a community. Obviously this knowledge wouldn't be accessibly in website format post-shitstorm, but hey, one person learning one small thing might just put us ahead a little bit.

The reason it's important to change bandages is because your skin will grow into them if you leave them on too long, and ripping them off will reopen the wound.

Medical saline solution (used for IVs for patients at risk for dehydration, as well as irrigating wounds and mucous membranes) is made by dissolving 9 grams NaCL in 1 liter water. Your body will absorb water with less salt, and saltier solutions will suck water out of your body. Useful for managing swelling.

If your glasses are broken, you can make a temporary substitute by poking small holes in a piece of paper and looking through them. This forces your eyes to focus and improves vision.

This is an interesting concept. I saw a variation of this in which the constructor's urine was purified into drinkable water in a short amount of time ( Man Vs. Wild). Very interesting, especially in places in which water will be difficult to come by/contaminated. Also, the comment on proper IV saline ratios could be very helpful in becoming a veritable wasteland doctor.

Exactly, tiny stuff can save lives when shit gets real. I'm especially interested in "jury-rigged" solutions to common medical problems, because we won't always have available antiseptics and penicillin and so on.

This is not necessarily from an apocalyptic standpoint, but I think in terms of having to "start from scratch", this would work.

This is very good. The way that I'd assess how valuable these types of things are in this context is to imagine that you were suddenly placed in a world that weathered an apocalypse some 100 years prior, and gave it to the leader of some village. How huge of an impact would it have?

You can get penicillin by wiping a piece of moist bread on a windowsill and putting it in a shoebox in your closet for a few days. Penicillium, the mold from which penicillin is derived, looks like a bunch of black suckers. You can eat this safely, but I'm sure it'd taste horrible so you should mash it up and mix it with something more appetizing.

Still quite helpful to know how to win, when the need arises. Thank you kindly, Anonymous. Let's look for some more basic medical knowledge, as well.
