So I just graduated and landed a job as a Graduate Nuclear Power Engineer. Anyone care to tell me how much Japan has fucked my prospects?

Probably not too bad because there are so few of you to begin with. It mostly means no new reactors for another few decades.

>> No.2837346

>>2837331
if you are in the US, probably just as fucked as you were before, not like there were any new reactors being seriously being planned before it happened.

>> No.2837351

Learn french, 73~ percent of their energy is nuclear powered. They seem to do alright.

>> No.2837358

learn chinese. say have what, 24 reactors building? or hire with terrapower

>> No.2837361

don't listen to these people. as I understand it nuclear power isn't a bad gig. even if the plants you work on shut down there's a chance you'll have a job in decommissioning them.

I'm a Britfag. Do you honestly believe America won't be building new nuclear power stations?

>The US plans to push forward with plans for a new generation of nuclear reactors, a top government official said, even as Japan struggles to contain a potential nuclear meltdown in the aftermath of Friday's earthquake.

Prospects are great! It'll take several decades to dismantle the old reactors and deal with the waste.
So don't fear that you won't get a job.

Why use nuclear power when we can just use solar cells?

You need to play it to your advantage.
Engineer it the fuck up. You need to be part of new research to make nuclear safer, cleaner and more efficient.
People will bitch, but at the end of the day they still expect their lights to click on at night. Ideals become unimportant bullshit in the face of a necessity, i.e. Vegans would eat a pound of bacon if your starved them enough.

Maybe you can work on nuclear disposal, recycling and containment. That should become a flourishing industry. It's embarrassing what we do with nuclear waste today. It's pretty much left in parking lots in the middle of no where or made into "depleted uranium" weapons.

Fucking stupid.

the last nuclear plant started in the US was in '96, there are no real plans for more at this time.

If I'm not mistaken, they're building a nuclear plant near Waynesboro, GA through GA Power.

You are. An Early Site Permit is not a Construction and Operating License.

Point taken, but isn't that a so-called 'plan'.

link? I've seen per-pre-planning discussion for expansion for like 6 years but didn't see any actual decision to move forward with it.

Until the NRC issues the COL, there isn't any plan.

Those cunts! Then why are they charging me for a 'Nuclear Construsction Recovery Cost'?!
