What does /sci/ think about popsci? And no trolling please, I want honest opinions on the matter no matter how insipid they might appear.

>> No.2812762

Somebody has to explain science to gen public, but i wouldn't want to waste my time doing it :P

Also, people like Hawkings and Feynmann seem to do a pretty damn good job of it, so I wouldn't complain...

3rd year engineering physics undergrad ftw!

Popsci = Shit

>> No.2812767

Not everybody does a good job doing it, but then again not everybody does a good job doing science anyway.

>> No.2812771

Bending over backwards for plebeians, commoners, simpleton, etc. If people aren't intellectually capable of understanding science in it's complex form, they don't deserve to know it.

>> No.2812773

The good: it gets people interested in science. Some of those people actually pursue science.

The bad: it makes people spout half-truths and act like know-it-alls.

Agree. I still would take the good over the bad any day though.

Popsci=essential. Disciplines are so specialized that they must have a dumbed-down version of their conversations, otherwise they will become totally balkanized from society.

Everyone here is a consumer of pop history, pop literature, pop law, and pop politics, but you likely treat that knowledge with the same credibility as your technical expertise. Almost all of the engineering guys certainly rely on pop bio and pop medicine; likewise the bio guys rely on pop physics.

Is that really a problem? People actually having the social skills to share a bit of knowledge they've learned and like to share it with others?

All of it is okay except Michio Cocku.

Seeing as you're on this board I would have assumed that you have already figured this out, but no one likes a know it all.

I hate arrogant people with a passion. But sadly, you kind of have to be an arrogant asshole to get ahead in life.

It was good and very professional back in the old days with a strong scientific background. You really get the feeling that the persons and scientists wanted you to learn something astonishing.

Today popsci has become more entertainment and less learning. They want to impress you with computer animations and "Say Wow" every 5 seconds. But they have completely forgotten about the didactic aspect. If I watch a modern popsci show I can barely remember anything after it.

I am here because of the popsci, so I really can't agrue.
I think >>2812773 is right. I act like both good and bad, I act like a know-it-all, but it also makes me want to know-it-all.

popsci is good because it gets people scientifically literate.

it's also good because it gets kids interested in science. that's how i got interested first.

>> No.2814216

It's good because scientific knowledge should be spread and available to all, and some people can develop an interest in science due to it. But it also leads to a lot of misunderstandings. I have know way to many kids who thinks quantum mechanics means anything can happen if they believe hard enough.

lol omg i've heard so many people spout that bs. "quantum mechanics unpredictable. therefore unicorns"
