We're creating a model rocket in physics.

There is a question on this sheet that says
> What type of paint is best to use?

I never even knew type of paint affected (drag or aerodynamics?) or maybe none. Does the paint simply affect the mass of the rocket?

Anyone know if there is a pro/con in a type of paint (water based, oil based, etc) being used on a model rocket that will use an engine/parachute to take off and land? If so, which paint is best?

I'd say oil based or something for sure.

Water-based objects typically degrade under ultraviolet light. Ink definitely does, and I'm pretty sure paints do.

Possibly oil because it would also be electrically inert, resulting in less possible static charge as the object collides with any dusts or stuff.

Best paint is parkerization. You'll probably kill yourself trying though.

the emissivity and absorptivity matter for actual spacecraft, depending on the mission and payload. the effects on drag are pretty unimportant. i'd say the weight probably is as well but for a model rocket i don't know...

Red paint is 2.3% faster than all other paints.

I think you should choose reflective paint to blind your mo-fo teachers.

Well, the main purpose of paint is simply to smooth the surface, make it look pretty, and (if it's made of metal) protect the rocket from corrosion.

You'd want to have as thin a layer as possible to reduce weight. Also, if you have blobs /droplets of paint, that could add a *tiny* amount of drag to your rocket (although this would probably be insignificant). You'd also want to make sure your paint job is very smooth to reduce friction drag as much as possible, although again this effect is probably pretty minor...
