in matrices, what does it mean to add for example:

5I_2 to another matrix?
(5 times I subscript 2)

Thanks!

Not exactly sure what you are asking...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_addition

i know how to add and all that! but in this question on my homework its telling me to multiply two matrixes, then to add the matrix "i" that has a coefficient and a subscript; i'm not sure what it's telling me to do on the latter.

i is referring to identity matrix I assume

I imagine 5I_2 refers to the identity matrix with size 2 multiplied by the scalar 5 or:
(5,0
0, 5)
