Petro engineering is good as done. The old fields pretty stacked and peak oil and decline in petroleum reserves means its not profitable in the long term.

Go green tech instead.

water engineer here, but i'd disagree with you about petroleum engineering.

a lot of the EASY oil is gone, but they are constantly coming up with new ways to make the "hard" oil easier (i.e. pumping water or gas down to push oil up, etc). this has them exploring "dried up" oil fields, and even some oil fields that weren't worth drilling previously.

not to mention that (assuming peak oil is right), a decline in supply of oil and increasing demand (outgrowing the efforts of hybrids and alternate fuels, globally speaking) means higher oil prices and more demand for people who can get that oil into barrels.

again i'm not an expert, but the one class I took on this stuff opened my eyes to how complex the oil market really is, and how oversimplified "peak oil" is (considering the fluid definitions of "reserves", etc)
