I have an old 89 that's like 10 years old. I wasn't allowed to use it in Calc due to CAS.

On top of that, whenever you entered something like 3/5, it would return back 3/5 nicely formatted instead of a decimal. Anyone know how to make it actually solve some shit? =P

As a calculator, the TI-89 is a god.

Those of you who prefer the TI-84 or TI-83, you don't deserve nor know how to use the TI-89.

There are two ways.

If you always want to work with decimal aproximations press [MODE] and then press f2, go down until you highlight Exact/aproximation. After that press right and press [2].

If you work with fractions because you are doing things by hand where fractions are better than decimals but still want to get an idea of how much would the result be in decimals press [<>] and then press [ENTER].

I like having my ti-89 for when I need to do a shitton of tedious integrals or calculations, but normally I just use my little casio non-graphing scientific calculator. It's easier to use for 99% of all calculations I use a calculator for.

The study of (mathematical) statistics is as different from the application of statistical tools as the study of mathematics is from the applications of calculus.

I've yet to see a calculator, or even software package, that has any knowledge of Sobolev spaces and the analysis of distributions that are required for really understanding most modern statistics.

Are you an arts major? Because I know I don't want to be finding the determinants of 7X7 matrices on fucking paper.

Mathmatica, especially wolfram Alpha is the bomb. But you need a computer to get to it.

>> No.2767913

>>2767853

I was related the story of a graduate student teaching a class in linear algebra. He wanted to test the idea of undetermined matrices and so wrote a problem asking students to find the determinant of the product of a 4x3 matrix with a 3x4 matrix. As he reviewed the exam, he realized that it was conceivable that students would actually do the multiplication and hence waste a lot of time. So he changed the problem to one of finding the determinant of the product of 10x9 and 9x10 matrices. On test day he was horrified at the number of students who (often correctly) performed the multiplication and the proceeded to get to the second step of a co-factor expansion before running out of time.

It's the only time I can recall ever hearing of a math major even remotely being asked to calculate something like a 7x7 matrix.

>> No.2767991

and to find the determinants of 100 x 100 matrices, you're gonna need more than a shitty fucking calculator.

Uni mathfag here, I lost my calculator years ago and haven't looked back. Everything I do is theoretical except for my applied research project (pharmacokinetics) for which I use MATLAB almost exclusively

>> No.2768368

A combination of hands, brains and computers (desktops or better) do all the "real" math in the world. Calculators are for portable calculations. Who wants to memorize sin tables? No one.
