I have no idea what i'm doing in college. I really really need some guidance. sorry this is kinda long but I REALLY need some input.

I'm nearing the end of my sophomore year. I entered as a physics/philosophy double major but I only ever took 1 philosophy class. I spent my freshman year working really hard on physics. basically put all my time into it and still got Bs. I had no social life and basically no fun. I also didn't get to where I wanted to be academically. I basically hated every second of it.

I seriously wanted to just drop out after that but my parents wouldn't hear it and said they wouldn't support me financially if I ever wanted to go back (which I fully intended to do after I had just taken some time off to figure shit out).

So anyway I went back with my 3.4ish GPA not really caring, dropped my physics major but still took a lot of the classes and the math support thinking of maybe switching to a math major. Last semester I was a lot more social and finally got my first kiss at 20. it wasn't anything that lasted though.

then my classes got insanely fucking hard and I couldn't keep up both academics and social life. I ended up with 2 Cs that semester and my GPA dropped to 3.19. i had been throwing around the idea of going pre-optometry for a while because it seems like a great career path but I didn't know what major to go with it. So I started this semester thinking switching back to physics and trying to do pre-optometry classes simultaneously.

So that's where I am now and it is FUCKING hard. you have no idea. I thought I had no spare time before- I absolutely have no free time now. Literally every waking second I spend on studying unless I'm just completely burnt out. I'm also back to being friendless again and once again classes aren't going so well only now this year instead of just not getting As I'm at risk of getting MORE Cs and fucking my GPA up even more.

(cont.)

I just don't know what to fucking do. I don't know what to major in or what to do with my life. I want to enjoy the 'college experience' a little bit too but I'm always just so fucking stressed out. i've never even been to a single party. I want to get a gf and have actual relationships with people. I want to just improve myself as a person and not have to be stressed out about classes all the time.

I don't know what to fucking do. The last day to drop a class is Friday. I'm thinking of dropping my Bio class and the whole pre-optometry thing because Bio is really the class that's making my life hell this semester.

But I don't know if I want to really do physics for the rest of my life. I'm just not ready to be making these kinds of decisions right now. My mindset feels more like a sophomore in high school not college. I'm not ready to decide what I want to do yet. I want to just find out things about myself and meet people and get a girlfriend.

I'm just so fucking stressed out and need some help. I don't want to fall back into another couple months of depression that will just set me back even more.

What should I do?

How did I learn? I fucked things up repeatedly until I got the hang out of it, if I even do.

Find a specific club at your university and try to go to it consistently. There should be video game, anime, atheist, nerd, political, majors clubs. Just find one you want to hang out at and try to make their meetings. Choose only one. Let it be your weekly escape. It helps a lot.

You're getting a little far in to fuck around with where you want to go, OP. I'm sorry that shit has been so hard so far, but if you're having a hard time with it, maybe it isn't for you? I don't mean that you should only do things that are easy for you, but I mean if you're having a lot of trouble with the intro classes and are miserable, you may want to reconsider your options.

On the bright side, you still have a pretty decent GPA, and you probably have most of your gen-ed stuff taken care of. So it's not all bad. Unless you want to go to grad school or some professional school, there's no need to worry about having a super-high GPA. Also, don't think that you need to go to grad school just because you don't know what it is you want to do with your life.

Anyway, I started out by saying that you're a bit far in to dick around with classes, but the best advice I can give you is to take a lot of different classes to see what you really like. I mean a WIDE variety of classes. Have you tried chem at all? It seems like you tried every related major, but I just thought you might want to check it out (also I need to blatantly shill for my major). Do you know you really want a degree in a hard science? Have you tried social sciences? Have you tried other things like liberal arts?

Don't let the attitudes of /sci/ get you down about non-science-related majors or social sciences. It matters far more that you do something you actually enjoy and can be successful at. Plus, the social sciences can be cool and fun (I think linguistics is pretty cool, even though it's a pretty soft science).

To an extent, yeah, but really all you learn in chem lab is the basics, which doesn't really begin to touch limitations caused by your equipment. If your school has a halfway decent chem program you'll be learning methods you'll really use all the time in a lab situation. The reason labs are stupid is because you're just running through a checklist of things you were told to do and then getting an A for turning in a short report. But not professor will let you in their lab if you can't perform basic procedures.

I don't like this. Also there is potential for things to go really wrong. What if i completely fuck up bio and get a D or worse? I'll never recover from that.

if I drop bio I could focus on physics and probably do a lot better in those classes. In one of my physics classes this semester i have a decent shot at an A. I still don't know if i'll be able to handle upper level physics though and my GPA is nowhere near grad school level at the moment.

We hung out alot, went on a few dates but it never turned into anything serious. We saw less and less of each other and I became a bit of a recluse and very miserable. I am extremely poor and could not envision my future clearly and what I could envision looked pretty bleak. So I dropped out. Now I am enrolled at my community college in a nursing program, with my financial I do not have to pay any tuition right now and have enough money for all of my books and gas. After I become a licensed nurse Ill move out of my parents house, pull double shifts on the weekends and go to whatever fucking school i want to. Ill probably major in chemistry because I love it. So, my only unique advice is that you mentioned philosophy. I know that psych/philosophy doesn't always get along, but since your parents were okay with the initial dual-degree idea, why not take a philosophy course, a psych course and see if you like them?

This next part is important to your health. You are under no circumstances going to actually do a dual-degree. If you love philosophy, go for it. If you're on the fence and psych was a close second, go for the B.S.
I know there's a stigma switching from "hard" to "soft" sciences, but by the same hand, you're used to a beatdown that the others aren't. You will kick the ever-loving poo-poo out of your psych/phil courses.
More importantly, the "find one club" recommendation is very important. This is how I survived my undergraduate and masters'. I stopped there because Ph.D.'s are a monastic experience and a completely different game than other degrees.

Don't worry too much. I have a friend that paid for a Masters', didn't find work, spent 5 years working as a "Front Desk Clerk", worked 2 years cleaning kitchens, went to a 2 year culinary school and is now happy as a line-cook.

For what it's worth this is coming from someone who held the same 11-7 job for 5+ years then flat out quit one day and I have been going to school full-time with max student loans and never looked back.

I've been going back and forth between work and school. I can't take either of them for more than a year at a time without feeling suicidal.

I had a job over the summer that I enjoyed doing and was perfectly happy there. I worked hard but it felt good to get a paycheck. I also had time on my hands to chill with friends in the evenings.

I wanted to just keep doing that for a while until I figured out what I wanted to go to college for exactly but no I had to go back. Now I work my ass off and FAIL and it just makes me fucking miserable. I get reclusive and depressed. I want to just go back to how it was in the summer.

I guess it's too late for that now though. I don't know wtf I'm doing really. I don't know why I'm here or even bothering.

ok so you would rather be cleaning a well cellar all day that has pipes running at over 2000 psi connected to wells which release dangerous h2s gas for a mere $15 bucks an hour? Oh and you have to use diesel to clean all the nasty oil shit because the "green" soap the government wants you to use doesn't fucking work.

Ya OP confirmed for spoiled brat who doesn't realize how lucky he really is.

gazillion posts later...

>OP, take a break and chill before you ruin your life
>OP, you're a spoiled brat. so keep weepin' in your spoiled misery, brat.

I dunno bout you, OP, but here is when I'd go off, get some sleep, and either go shove yourself through the end of the semester and go for a break, or go cake yourself in spoiledness forever and ever.

good luck, man

Get a better job faggot, neither you nor OP are better than the other. Both universities and jobs have their downsides, quit trying to prove which is worse in the end. My dad has a shitty job that I would never do, but he wouldn't want to take the equally demanding classes that I'm taking either.

Every person that I've met at my job wants their kids to go to school instead of working there. And do you know why? because school is much more pleasant and rewarding than working. Any body over 30 can tell you that. Fucking kids these days think they know it all.

Common factor in every one of these people working at your job: they didn't go to school.

I've been pretty harsh, but some of that is because I had to pay my way through and I personally think dropping out of college when someone else is paying for your classes is a mistake. Just finish off the semester and next fall change your major to something a lot easier. Just remember it could be worse, your looking at things in a very short term perspective, which is what a few people in this thread are trying to tell you.

To a certain extent school is pleasant, I'll give you that. But then depending what you want to do, it can get to the point where its just as bad as having a crappy job. One way to avoid that is to take things slow and don't take more classes than you can handle. This is where I screwed up and regret doing, and like I said before, decided take things slow for the fall. I mean honestly, you are going to be attending this place for 4(+ for some people) years, you might as well make the best of it even if you hit some speed bumps.

So OP, as someone who is partially in the same situation as you, do whatever you need to do. If you know you can't do bio, drop it and really consider what you want to do. You are running out of time to be change majors so often, so really think about what you want to do in the future.
