A basic disaster survival kit with things like long-shelf life food, bottled water/filter, flashlight, first aid kit, multi-purpose tools ect located in an easily accessible spot.

Or perhaps a disaster plan/a drill for common disasters in your area. Such as knowing where to go, where to meet up with family, what to do immediately once the disaster begins (Such as getting away to open ground if possible in the event of an earthquake, or at least away from windows.

There's a lot that can be done to prepare, and that people don't realize this goes to show exactly how unprepared for disasters Americans are.
