hey sci,

meet jake barnett a 12 year old boy. He is diagnosed with mild autism and is what many people call sauvant.

He is currently studying theoretical physics at IUPU which is some mid tier university in america so it still has pretty high standards. Apparently he is already starting to exceed what current professors can teach him and is being suggested for a research position at age 12.

Here is a link to a news story run on him:
http://www.indystar.com/article/20110320/LOCAL01/103200369

and a link to his youtube channel:
http://www.youtube.com/user/mathboysmom#p/u/1/fQl1D-AQI0E

He is currently suggesting that the speed of light or the hesienberg uncertainty principal might be wrong. Now i know this generates a lot of controversy but should we not at least have an open mind about this is that not our duty as scientists to not automatically dismiss but to be skeptical until the evidence comes out.

Also I shared this with you mainly cause i find it amazing to see such a blend of amazing high inteligence yet he seems to be functional in normal society. I definetely think his genome should be sequenced it might give some valuable insight into genes that could code for intelligence in humans.

what are your thoughts, does it also inspire you to see such an awesome display of intelligence.

The problem with people who are called 'smart' is that they set their sights way too high. They'll challenge currently held beliefs not necessarily because they may be wrong, but because they think they'll be right about anything. Take a look at that douche with a 200+ IQ, throwing away his education and trying to do some shit with binary and God. What the fuck?

Anyway, I'm generalising. I wish the kid good luck and his ideas should still be entertained as he has shown himself to be worthy of the respect.

This child, as you've stated, is a savant. Now this is a psychological term for someone wit a mental disorder who has exceptional knowledge in a certain field. this normally includes memory, for savants are not known for their fluid memory but their crystallized memory. he is not likely able to truly process the information he remembers. Everyone think the hero is great - in fact, the hero is so great that they wish they were that hero. The hero's achievements make them feel like side characters in another's story, as if their life has no weight to it.

In short, every man sees himself as the main character, and is disapointed by things that show it to be untrue.

Autism is an impairment of social skills. People can have psychological disorders and still excel in certain areas. It's just that his psychological state is considered abnormal. Usually, this would have a large negative impact on that person's life. But his talents are so great that it'll likely not be a hindrance to him.

Having a psychological disorder isn't being broken or completely negative. It's a descriptor, based on the presence of certain symptoms. Just because you think that a person will live fine doesn't mean everything about him is normal or unimportant.

Also, he misunderstands what is uncertainty as he is using the classical thought experiment that uncertainty is caused by light in the measurement.

Physicsfag undergrad here(cambridge).
Yeah it's probably bollocks.
Best possible spin is he's very clever, but not very good at explaining.
His arguments are too vague, so I didn't find any obvious contradictions, but a lot of the stuff he says is nonsense.
"causes the error in the displacement...using newtonian mechanics" - there is absolutely no statistical side to Newtonian mechanics and it also has no correctish description of light to use.

His description of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle is too weird, yet also too vague to say its definitely wrong.

"work-energy theorem follows from several derivatives" - the fact he didn't correct himself when he said derivatives instead of derivations suggests he's memorised a script. "applies in all cases" - doesn't in relativity, mass-energy does, could forgive this one if he is genuine but I doubt it.

there were a bunch of other things and the whole thing didn't seem right to me.

Serious query: Have any of these super-genius toddlers every really done anything revolutionary?

I had to TA for a history of technology class last term, and it seems like everything that has had any impact on our lives was the result of a collaborative or highly competitive effort from a group of above-average individuals. Geniuses, though, are kind of hard to find.

I mean, I'm SURE the kid will do more than me. But, reinventing physics? Yeah, I call shenanigans. He'll probably end up doing really solid work that will mostly only end up in specialized journals.

>> No.2746256

He seems to making really absurd connections between formulas he's created and well known ones. Especially considering he's using e = mc^2 (shortened form).

Regardless, if he loses media coverage I'm sure he'll turn out just fine for academia, but he doesn't need a whole bunch of people telling him he's a genius for not having done anything yet. That could only hinder him.

>> No.2746264

As far as the "re-writing" physics is concerned the kid is on the right track. He has already identified something that confuses modern physicists. He has found the limit of classical mechanics basically, and hasn't yet been taught quantum mechanics. Classical mechanics break down when examining things on a microscopic level, which is where quantum mechanics take over and can be used to accurately describe most if not all known occurrences at that scale.

I personally feel like their should be a unified theory bridging the two. Contradictions don't make sense. I feel like the current separation between the two is probably a product of some error in the way we view the natural world from a mathematical stand point.

So maybe in a few years when the kid learns quantum he'll put it all together and fix something that has been broken since Einstein came in and facerolled astrophysics

I think string theory is some math with a lot of conjecture. They see patterns or equations for which they have no observed correlation in the natural world so all of the sudden there's 11 dimensions, and parallel universes. It's theoretical physicists getting tired of turning their wheels and going no where so they assembled a bunch of ridiculous assumptions just so they can say, "Hey look we're finally getting somewhere."

String theory is a bunch of impractical bullshit, that won't get corrected until hundreds of years down the line, and these scientists know and exploit that fact. No one can prove they're wrong so they'll just keep pulling shit out their ass until someone smarter comes along and smites them with their hammer of divinity.

"For example, Jake often recited the alphabet -- forward and then backward. He used Q-tips to create vivid geometrical shapes on the living room floor. He solved 5,000-piece puzzles (rather quickly). And he once soaked in a state road map and ended up memorizing every highway and license plate prefix.

And perhaps most amazingly, he could recite the mathematical constant pi out to 70 digits.

"I'm at 98 now," Jake said, interrupting his mom during an interview.

And then, a week later, he was up to 200 digits after the decimal point -- forward and backward."

Regurgitation of information is merely the ability to retain and call it up at will.

Can he UNDERSTAND any of this information and apply it to science? If he doesn't have some weird personality snap and just lose it I wonder where he will end up in his 20s.

- he's been diagnosed as autistic, been doing some therapy and is improving enough to be socially functional

- his autistic traits make him more apt to memorise lots of data

- he is currently tutoring some college students (?)

- he hasn't published anything or officially submitted a theory or solution to a problem.

I don't see where the fuss is. Probably there are thousands of kids like him on this planet, but they're not advertising themselves on youtube. And there may have been also more we never heard of.

To me, he looks surely more intelligent than most of his age, but doesn't look very happy. We'll see how he survives the hormonal activation of the brain in a few years. If it makes him stronger, he might achieve something of note, if not he might join the long succession of childhood prodigies who eventually settled down to live an ordinary life, while continuing to display the shadow of their skills to anyone who gave them a beer, for a short distraction.

I've seen a similar case in a village in a poor country, where a young guy was able to make mental computations with large numbers faster than a computer. He was the local big sensation and was doing it for free drinks.

1st off.
At the age of 12, ANY of you understood math/physics at this level?
No.
He's ONLY twelve.
Its too early to tell.
If he does anything original it will be after at least 16-17 years old.

This is the usual pattern of all geniuses ever lived.

He might be excited and wrong but that doesnt mean anything, in few years he might find something extraordinary.
Or just end up as a nutjob.
Like all 200IQ did before him
Yes, Langan and Kim (200IQs) ended up doing nothing, Kim was decleared a "failed" genius in his country, and currently working as a normal employ in a shit company in Korea.
Its JUST IQ.
But this kid is quite different than others.
Plus HE IS NOT AUTISTIC, OP is misinformed.
He had a mild autism(which was bullshit cause he was JUST socially awkward and nothing more, which he overcame, and NOW HE IS NORMAL, NO MORE AUTISM).
Currently he's just a very smart kid.

Ok listen cryfags.
Prodigies have NOTHING on average smart people.
How?
Look at all evidence.
Most 'geniuses' do nothing in the end, they fail, just stupid ideas and they are forgotten.
For example, Feynman had IQ of 12X tier and yet he's imba, his logic was more solid than of 200's IQs.

IQ tests measure some specific things, not creativity,or out of the box thinking etc which is the reason why we have technology.

Just being a human calculator/harddiskMemory puts you to a ...calculator/harddiskMemory tier.
And thats all, they are completely useless in science and actually intelligence-wise, they can learn what already been discovered but they wont find anything new.

All those geniuses who solve calculus and know 6 languages at 4yo do nothing in later life or even if they try they can't.
Einstein COULDN'T SPEAK at the age of 4, yet he is the symbol of genius, the most celebrated scientist.

Creativity/Innovation/Out of the box (which is actually imagination WITH logic=creativity), thats the major thing that makes scientific breakthroughs, not high grades or any of that stupid stuff.

Child prodigies= early/faster development, they dont get any smarter.
Unlike the rest of smart people they just do it slowly, but they reach the same level in adulthood.
Tao is on of the people that had both high IQ and creativity, it happens, but 99% of prodigies are just garbage that have shitloads of development at early age, thats all.

>> No.2746873

>>2746833
Prodigies get all this shit pushed onto them so early in life that they don't get the 10 - 15 years to develop an interest in something of their own. They decide fuck this shit and don't amount to much. imo.

Secondly, you're comparing a painting, an actual tangible accomplishment, to a medal, something Tao received that presumably REPRESENTS an accomplishment... How is that comparable in any way you fucking moron?

Since you used the Mona Lisa as an analogy, I guess you like that painting, huh? It's nice... What is Tao's "Mona Lisa" then? And don't say "receiving the medal." Being awarded isn't an accomplishment, EARNING an award is the accomplishment.
