Science & Math -> implying math isn't a science. Discuss.

>> No.2726283

It isn't.

Ever heard of a mathematician who follows the scientific method? Ever heard of a mathematician who runs experiments?

Yeah, exactly, they don't even perform exp-

Oh.

>> No.2726292

>>2726283

There are both formal sciences and empirical sciences.

>> No.2726296

I've always felt like Math is just the language of science.

>> No.2726297

>>2726281
math is the language of nature. physical scientists must use math. even biologists are increasingly using math (see bioinformatics) with the recent advancements in molecular biology. math is nature distilled to its purest form.

>> No.2726300

Think of math as the software/programming language science runs on.

>> No.2726307

It's certainly poetic to say that math is the lipstick on the angel called science, but it doesn't answer the question.

>Experimental mathematics is an approach to mathematics in which numerical computation is used to investigate mathematical objects and identify properties and patterns

>setting up a program that works under certain axioms and looking what comes out of it
>implying that's an experiment

It would be like if I invented new laws of physics that say that F = mv, and then made a computer program that simulates a system according to that law, and used the results of the program to prove I'm right.

>> No.2726315

>>2726308
Other way around. A computer program starts churning up possible results, and then the mathematician, if (s)he deems it plausible, must prove it is correct.

Hence, there's an experimental process involved.

It's not an experiment if the real world doesn't come into it anywhere.

Computational physics is NOT a branch of experimental physics.

Mathematics doesn't deal with reality, it deals with abstract concepts and proofs. You can prove something is true in mathematics.

Science doesn't allow for such a thing.

>> No.2726340

I am fairly sure math isn't falsiable.

As such it cannot really be considered science.

>>2726333

wut?

>> No.2726347

>>2726340
X=X+1 alway
if X=7
7=7+1=8
not true
falsified

>> No.2726351

>>2726347
Not under an axiomatic system that puts the difference between 7 and 8 as zero.

>> No.2726352

You can't prove the axioms of logic. They are assumed to be true.

Hence they are an experimental result; they could conceivably be different in different universes.

Hence math is a science.

>> No.2726363

But is science? Does it require experimental evidence or any kind of valid evidence?

>> No.2726382

>>2726351
Physics isn't science under an axiomatic system that states that observations, no matter how unanimous and plentiful, can't be considered valid evidence.

>> No.2726401

>>2726382
True.

On the other hand, Physics tries to explain reality. And axiomatic system that says that you cannot use reality as proof for your model is sort of pointless.

In math there is no such distinction.

Not because every person has his own definition means that there is not a definition that is established by some kind of authority which is generally accepted.

Science is the enterprise of acquiring knowledge. It is cummulative and the knowledge has to be empirical. It is about the understanding of the univers, both social and natural.

Maths aren't a science since it is not empirical and it is not about the understanding of the univers per se. It helps to acquire it, but it doesn't study it.
