What's the best telescope for a beginner?

Beginner being a scientist that knows how to learn, not an idiot.

~500 dollar budget, or more, depends. I don't want to be replacing it in a year, and I'd like to get in to astrophotography eventually.

Not really an astronomer, but I've heard Newtonian telescopes are good for beginners.
With a $500 budget you could probably buy a pretty sweet telescope.
