2717774 No.2717774 [Reply] [Original]

Saw this on a troll physics blog. But it got me thinking.
Why is this impossible?

>> No.2717801

>>2717774
the hell kind of fluid is attracted to a magnet?
i dont think this would work.

>> No.2717798

Because the magnet would have to be strong enough to pull the ferrofluid against the force of gravity up the tube.
Therefore the ferrofluid would simply stick to the magnet and wouldn't turn the generator.

>> No.2717816

Move the water wheel so that the fluid flows down the right side in a clockwise fashion. It will pump fluid up the tube

>> No.2717815

>>2717798
What if the strength is just enough to get it to the end of the pipe but not enough to carry it through the air to the magnet? Maybe such an equilibrium can be achieved, and the fluid falls.

>>2717801
A ferrofluid, lol.

I just wanted to know if it can be done. But what the hell, let's dump.

>> No.2717850

ferrofluid gets pulled all the way up the tube against gravity from faraway yet doesn't stick to magnet at closer distance? doesn't make sense. Fluid would just get pulled to magnet and not drop

oh wait >>2717798 just said the same thing

>> No.2717852

>>2717774

because ferrofluids do not work that way.

>> No.2717858

>>2717815
thats not even close to being intuitive, whats wrong with you? if its pulling the fluid at a distance and lets it fall back down at a closer distance from the magnet, then my butt would be able to breathe fire.

theoretical since the mass at that distance would be enormous nevermind the energy required. infact is there even a material with the compressive strength and modulus to even make that possible?

>> No.2717885

>>2717774
The illustration shows the magnet levitating the fluid vertically. But what if the pipe was a straight tube at an angle? It requires less force to pull the fuid up the slope then vertically at the end.

missing the point. If the magnet is strong enough to pull fluids that far away, whats stopping the fluid from leaving the tube and attaching to the magnet.

>> No.2717920

>>2717892
why wouldn't this work?

>> No.2717923

>>2717885
The ferrofluid will just stick to the side of the tube where the magnet is.

You could use electromagnets, and it would work, but the energy produced would be less than that required to run the electromagnets.

essentially, the far end of the stick doesn't "feel" you pushing on it for a long long time.

That wouldn't work. You'd have to vacuum up the two giant colliding airmasses that formed the cloud to stop the storm. I'm pretty sure the cloud would just re-form after you vacuum it, because more rising warm, moist air would take its place.

Yeah. This would work. Please try it. Please. I want to see you try this.

>> No.2718004

magnetic field strength is EXPONENTIAL over distance, which means if a magnet is strong enough to lift the fluid at the far end, then by the time it travels even half way it will be moving at very high speeds and there's no way it will fall down from the pipe.

and I just got trolled

>> No.2718013

>>2717969
The device simply could not work: any magnet strong enough to pull the ferro fluid up the ramp would necessarily be too powerful to allow it to drop through the ramp.

>> No.2718020

>>2717969

Magnets operate according to the inverse square law, so if they can pull up a ferrofluid to the top of the slope, they can pull it up right to the magnet and the fluid would never fall.

What I don't get is why they never stick a second wheel on the up-part of the mechanism as well and get double infinite energy.

Sir.

I'm not so good at electrodynamics, but if I may (not) quote Maxwell: WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO DIV B = 0?

Not that I wouldn't agree on the field *either* drawing up the ferromagnetic material *or* allowing it to fall back down again. But how the fuck do you get the idea of an EM-field with exponential growth over distance?
