UPDATE: The building housing the No. 3 core of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant has just exploded. Prior to this explosion, plutonium leaked into the core. "The addition of Pu-239 to the potential Fallout mix, should it occur, will definitely make matters worse. The scenario for mixing into the lower levels of the atmosphere and drifting to other areas remain the same – except in this case, there would be longer lasting particles that would be distributed and dispersed."

Hold on to your butts.

the giant encasements of concrete they build around nuclear power plants are not just for show. Even if a core were to melt down, it would be completely contained.

no, it is designed to easily withstand this. What is exploding is the outside containment, i.e the building around the actual plant.

Yeah, like Chernobyl was completely contained by the concrete building it was in and the steel vessel containing the reactor.
And radiation and fallout from Chernobyl didn't go anywhere, staying perfectly contained in the Ukraine.
Oh wait. Fuck. No. Those are both false. You're an idiot.

Chernobyl didn't have a containment structure. It just had the reactor and the reactor hall. Fukushima has the reactors situated inside reinforced containment structures, none of which have ruptured.

The only contamination so far was from the deliberately vented steam and gas, which later caused the explosions.

The containment structures are still intact and pressure in the reactors has stabilized and is dropping, meaning a decrease in the chain reaction and the temperature of the reactor core.

Just to clarify, what blew up were the reactor halls that COVERED the containment structures.

What happens if they fail to keep the core(s) cool, resluting in a catastrophic meltdown? A concrete container is not going to stop the fuel from possibly melting right through the bottom. It may not result in the dispersal of radioactive material into the atmosphere (much), but it will make cleanup of the site nearly impossible.

Do they even know what the approximate temperature of the core(s) is/are? It is my understanding that the hydrogen involved in the explosions was produced by the burning of the zircaloy surrounding the fuel, which means the fuel is still several thousand degrees.

>> No.2699708

>>2699644
At this point a meltdown isn't possible. There is a steady supply of cooling water being provided to the reactors to prevent one.

But even if there were, the containment structure is still build to withstand the heat of molten fuel and contain the radiation.

The hydrogen might have come from the top of uncovered fuel rods being exposed to steam. Another theory is that the temperature in the reactor is high enough to cause some dissociation of water. Exposed fuel isn't an issue anymore, because of adequate cooling water.

The reactors at Fukushima have the steel reactor core surrounded by a fucking huge tough reinforced concrete containment structure, surrounded by a concrete and steel building. The outside building exploded because of released hydrogen gas, but the steel reactor core is intact, as is the reinforced concrete containment structure. Chernobyl did not have such a structure, so when it's reactor vessel failed, shit hit the fan. If the fukushima reactor vessel fails, it will just be a pain in the ass.

Interestingly, the fukushima reactors predate the Chernobyl NPP. Guess the USSR just wasn't big on safety. Not big surprise.
