IMO a revamped political system would contribute the most to mankind in this day and age. I suppose that would mean an overhaul of the mass media/social infrastructure. All this new technology is useless if you have a shit tier government controlling it.

Also, our problem is not a lack of resources, it's an extremely poor distribution thereof. A vast majority of everything is concentrated within a tiny portion of the population (<1%) - fixing the inequity will ensure that we can sustain at least three or four times Earth's current population.

By the time we do approach the actual carrying capacity of this planet centuries down the line (estimated to be between 15 and 20 billion...even if you don't like the experimental technology discussed in the blog post I linked, the raw data regarding population densities are absolutely correct), we'll have either developed the technology to spread outward or overcome any desire to engage in further reproduction.
