I just use Windows 7 because it does what I need and I'm not a pretentious faggot.

Whichever one happens to lie around within reach.

On another note, care to explain how this pertains to science?

Slackware - Love the philosophy, KISS.
Also, it just works.

>> No.2686998

Running Ubuntu, but the super friendly hippie attitude is fucking annoying. Also lol at the Apple-like policy with evolution and that shit.
Probably going to try Mint next time it really annoys me.

THIS

Using Slackware again now after having used Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE for the past few months. It's good to be back.

>> No.2687048

i want something that has no graphic interface, that comes with basic command line tools like gawk + gcc, but really, really, nothing more. that doesn't take 4GB, has no problem with drivers and installs offline.

halp?

LFS, download all packages you need beforehand and write them to some external support so you won't need internet.

I used to be a slackware user, it was my first and will probably always be my favorite distro at heart, but it's just not as good as Debian anymore. Even with slapt-get you can't beat APT for convenience or practicality. It's Debian's strongest point, and goddamn I love it. Even if I wish it was on Slackware at heart.

>> No.2687087

Crunchbang has been behaving like a fucking retard, so I might as well just download Slackware. It seems like the good distro everyone ignores, then run in a VM and see if it has any problems in particular with the goddom drivers or Lispbox.

Wait, can I still sudo apt-get from Slackware? :3

I can't stand apt. You loose control of your system, but that's probably just me though.. I rarely install new software, so the 3 extra minutes it takes to install something is totally worth it.

>> No.2687115

SLAX
It saved my Win 7 installation once, no other Linux was as useful to me as that one.

>> No.2687118

>>2687087

No.

>>2687083

I share this >>2687101 poster's views. I dislike having to use package managers, giving up control and relying on some outside source to choose what is available. If a package is not in the repos and I'm used to apt-get installing it, then I usually just won't install it as it's too much of a hassle to get it working with the weird configuration of the system.

Instead on Slackware I compile everything so I know it front and back, plus I know all the library versions I've installed, if there's a problem I can recompile some of them with the debug options and run through the errors, etc. XFCE Slackware is my favorite, minimal, very light on resources, very UNIX-like and simple. Also pretty secure by default.
