I feel like a retard. I find it hard grasping the concept of math sometimes, maybe I over-think things, or maybe you're not supposed to understand the concept and only know how to apply the formula to find the result.

I'm trying wrap my head around percentages at the moment, but that may not be related to the problem I have.

my question is how much of math is logically comprehended compared to straight up function without the slightest idea of reason.

Pretty much 100% of linear math is completely logical, and a good portion of discrete is as well.

Percentages are just fractions bro.

thanks. I'm like 60% through khan academies exercises and I won't allot myself to cheat through one by just applying formulas.

the original number times the converted percentage as a decimal i.e. 50% 0.5 yields the amount removed not the result. I think that's what's confusing me.

I get 'reduce 150 by 30%' - which equals 100 - confused with 'how much is reduced from 150 if you reduce it by 30%' - which is the initial value times the decimal, 50.

Mathematics IS logic

except it is much more pure and less fallible than philosophical logic because it relies on symbols with immutable properties and interrelationships (such as numbers and operation signs) rather than wordplay and speculation

also, properly being able to "apply the formula" (ie understand the symbols and how to manipulate them) would imply understanding the concept... unless by apply the formula you just meant type things into a calculator and be fed an answer

you are talking about cheap calculation tricks not math. if you want your world fucked look into logic or set theory. the rest is just applying methodology.

>'reduce 150 by 30%' - which equals 100

150 - 150*30/100 = 105
