Riddle me this /sci/

What does an Engineer ACTUALLY do?

OPs pic is the perfect representation of the current state of corruption in China.

I go there all the time and their infrastructure is held together with glue. Everyone embezzles money and uses cheap labor and terrible materials. Shit just falls apart.

Electrical Engineers become electricians. Civil engineers become construction works. Mechanical engineers become mechanics.

It depends on the engineering field.

>> No.2630199

Civil and Structural Engineer here.

Engineers on the whole are responsible for designing the structural and mechanical systems that Architects plan.

For example, and architect may come up with an idea for the sexiest building ever, but when the engineer looks at the plans, several changes have to be made to make it actually stand up.

However, i work in the field of forensics, which relates to determining the cause of structural failures. The OP's pic is a classic case of lateral shear causing foundation failure.

A large excavation was carried out next to the building after it was built, causing an effective shear force through the piles. the entire building was structurally intact apart from the foundations after it fell.

Even the windows were still in place.

It varies from institution to institution.

In Australia the system is very hands-on, lots of lab work, lots of testing and research, not much 'lecturing.'

I'd say as a full time student around 20 contact hours per week, with another 20 hours private study. Being a good engineering student is like having a fulltime job.

...at which point the plans always seem to look something like this for whatever reason.
