on topic: I dunno, i think i might be getting my dream right now. As non-/sci/ as music may be, my band is getting signed and i might start a label/studio myself. Took a LOT of work and money getting here, but(so far) It's worth it. Shoot for your dreams OP, despite what religious people say, you have no extra lives, and you're playing a time trial. Score very high on the GRE. Apply to smaller grad schools that still give complete funding. You have a significant disadvantage by going to community college and having middling grades. You also most likely will not wind up as a professor. Those jobs are very competitive and professors do not vacate their jobs and retire like people in other professions do. If you play your cards right you may wind up doing primary research though...

You should look into MS programs too. These are not as well funded as PhD programs but some still give scholarships and stipends. There is always the option of using federal student loans...these are guaranteed if you are not a drug convict. If you do a loan funded MS at a state school you save $ over going to a private university and you will significantly increase your chances of getting a PhD at a competitive school later on. Still though you need a very high GPA in masters level grad school to progress. PhD level courses are not important really...they are just course work you should have it down. The real challenge is being a productive researcher on lab rotations and eventually on doing an original project for your dissertation.

1) Graduate school will end up PAYING you money, albeit a very very minute amount(think below minimum wage)

2) Why not go with... you know... high school teaching...?

Don't worry about money in graduate school, OP. There are things called assistantships that pay you through grad school. Considering that you have a job at the university, tuition is automatically voided, along with an additional (although miserable) amount of extra money.

If you live at the university, eat the university food, you'll be able to earn money to make a liveable wage in grad school (~20k a year) without the problems of tuition. Particularly if you are in science.

Now...if you can't get a 3.0 out of your undergrad, I'd be cautious as you may not get accepted.
