/sci/ I need some serious math help. And I mean serious.

I was out of high-school for about 5 years, and now that I applied to college, I need to do some entrance tests, all of them are easy, except the math test.

Things like: x=|−4−5| are on the practice test, and I remember -none- of that :(

What is the best way to refresh ones self? Is there a website, a really good book (torrent)?

This is the practice test. It starts off grade 2 easy stuff, and it ends with things that make me want to pull my hair.

|x| means absolute value of x which is the distance of x from the origin or 0. Essentially, just make whatever's in it positive.

The ||'s mean absolute value (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_value))
Basically it's the value inside but positive, so |-3| is 3. |-3|-|-4| would be 3-4, or -1.

It's asking for the absolute vale of -3 minus the absolute value of -4.

|x| <== this means the absolute value of x. It's asking for the magnitude of x, or, in other words, how far is it from 0 on a number line.

|-17| = 17
|54| = 54
|-786*10^18| = 786*10^18
|-x| = x
|x| = x

Do the operations inside of the || before you find the absolute. || is equivalent to parenthesis in order of operations. The first one is right but the second is wrong.
