Why can't absolute zero be reached? I heard there's some quantum shit going on but I don't know what it is.

>> No.2518405

Why don't you stop thinking useless stuff and get a life, faggot.

>> No.2518410

Because there is so much background radiation from the Big Bang.

Even if we reached it, measuring it would be impossible, because we'd have to disturb it to measure it.

If we made it happen, we'd for the Bose-Einstein condensate, which means electrons stop orbiting the nucleus and succumb to the weak force.

How much you care = a
Absolute Zero = b
a > b
Thus, you're not as cold-hearted as I've come to believe, anon.
Maybe if you could explain why you could care less but don't, we could figure out why absolute zero is impossible to achieve.

>> No.2519847

>>2519806
Actually, you can have negative temperatures (in kelvin).

The maximum positive temperature (infinite, I believe) is where half of all particles are in their excited state, where there are the most possible combinations and therefore the most entropy. With lasers and other such science, it's possible to force all the atoms into excited states; this is negative absolute zero - the opposite of absolute zero.

So rather than from negative infinity to positive infinity, the temperature scale goes from positive zero to positive infinity, which is identical to negative infinity (half excited = half not), and carries on up to negative zero.

I shit you not.

fucking A.

uncertainty says that i can't know the position and the momentum with absolute certainty and precision. at absolute zero ( no entropy) nothing would be moving and i would know the momentum and position of all of those particles.

therefore nothing can be absolute zero.

and negative kelvin guy is stupid. just stupid, stupid, fuck your dog stupid.

>> No.2519945

>>2519847
This is slightly correct. It's done in such a way (with lasers) that atoms will shed energy, even if they are the lowest energy item in a system. So it's thought of as them having infinite temperature because no matter how cold you make it, it still gives more energy into the system. This is one way that we can get close to absolute 0.

Dumb name though, isn't it?

>> No.2519977

Actually if I can remember it wright the absolute zero is the temperature in wich nothing can be moved, so in this temperature not even energy "temperature" can moves, so we can't continue extracting the energy of an object.
So if the hipothesis that the absolute zero can't be reached is because you just can't extract more energy as the energy itself can't move

>> No.2519997

>>2519977

i want a hipothesis (sic). like a fat, hungry and super angry booklet that is the culmination of graduate school frustration.

although i suppose that would be a hippothesis.

This is the answer

>> No.2520071

With essentially heat as energy, there is always some form of energy passing through everything, that's how time passes, so therefore by freezing to absolute zero (theoretically) we would have to freeze the entire universe and time itself would freeze. With that being said there is no system that could ever act as a perfect insulator to house such an experiment, to do so would conclude in stopping time.

Mainly because there is no upper limit.
I guess you could consider the entire universe compacted into a singularity to be this upper limit- as in the first moment of the big bang, but only because that's the hard limit on how much energy there actually is in the entire universe in an infinitely small area.
