There was probably plant life down there at the beginning of time, and when it froze over the plants adapted slowly to survive, used up all of the carbon dioxide, then completely died out when the lake became saturated with oxygen.

If we look really really really hard we might find the ancient cell tissue of these plants.

Assuming there is a lot of carbon dioxide trapped in the ice, there could be a plant that breaks up the ice to survive. Like a plant that generates heat and doesn't require light... who knows, it might break our understanding of what a plant is.
