I don't use macros too much, 99% of the time functional abstraction is fine. (Schemer here.) In my continued fraction arithmetic library I used two macros, both of which to sugar away lazy evaluation.

Macro hackery should only be used when you've got no other choice. If it is blowing your mind too much, just come back to it later.
