/sci/, excuse my ignorance, but can you answer me the following:

What's the difference between Bachelor's/Master's/PhD?

Do you need a Bachelor's degree to get a master's degree in the same carreer?
For example, Let's say I get an Undergrad in Math. Can I get a Master's degree in Physics? Or I need to get a Physics undergrad, and then a Physics master's?

What do you need to get a PhD? Is is a level Higher than Master's? Do you need a master's degree to get a PhD?

>> No.2435607

Also, how much does each last?
I know that undergrad last 4 years.

In physics in the US, you first get a Bachelor's degree, then you can go into either a Master's or Ph.D. program. In the Ph.D. program, you get your Master's along the way.

You have a high school diploma, you can upgrade it to a college/university diploma, which can be upgraded to a bachelors, which can be upgraded to a masters, which can be upgraded to a PhD, which can be upgraded to a Steven Seagal.

You are what your most upgraded form is, just like pokemon.

Can you go to a PhD program right after Undergrad?

The first degree you get in college in the US is a Bachelor's degree unless you go to a community college and get an associate's degree (generally 2 years).

Yes.

If you're interested in science than graduate school is typically free (plus you'll get a meager salary to live on). The average debt after obtaining your bachelors, however, is about 20-30k.

You can get masters and PhDs in a unrelated field but you may need to convince some professors to mentor you.

To get a PhD you need to pretty much "discover something". That is, produce original research. Getting a masters is similar to getting a bachelors - take some tests and do some assignments.

WTF is this shit?

>>2435607I know that undergrad last 4 years.

It lasts a number of credit hours, generally around 144 for a BS (bachelors of science). Whether it takes more or less than 4 years depends on how heavy a load you want to take and how many stacked prerequisites there are.

You generally get paid to do research or teach classes.

But PhD is not a "school" per se, like Masters or bachelors, right?

Aah, that explains the high number of teachers whose first language is not english at my school.

You go to a university, and after you get all your required classes out of the way, most of your time is spent working with a professor on some research project.

Yes and no. You do take some classes but things are very different. At this stage in the game you're teaching yourself mostly. You have a bit of advice from your advisor and mentors but, in the end, you're the expert on the science involved in your thesis.

one, you need a bs for any sort of graduate work. However, you don't necessarily need to do your graduate work in the same department. Fully half of the people in my engineering lab didn't do engineering as an undergrad. Though, those that didn't all did math or statistics which is related. Though one did double major in psych as well. also, in some schools you can go straight into the phd program after the BS, but you'll still earn your MS getting it.
