Hey atheists:

...999.999... + 1
= (...999.0) + (0.999...) + 1
= (...999.0 + 1) + (0.999...)
= (...0.0) + (1)
= 0 + 1
= 1
So ...999.999... = 0.

Problem?

>> No.2417467

yea problem

don't round your result :

line 5 = 1...0.999...

that's all
you failed

>> No.2417485

How the fuck do you get ...999.0+1=0?

This isn't even moderately clever

>> No.2417520

You could get rid of the parenthesis and the 1 because they don't make any difference. Then it is even easier to see that this is nonsense.

>> No.2417534

This is neither science or religion. It's not even math. What is it doing here?

Sage grows in every field.

I love math trolls but I don't get this one.

infinity + 1
= infinity + 0.999... + 1
= infinity + 0.999...

All good up to that point, but then you go here:

= 0 + 1

I think that you just fucked up what you were trying to do. You could do something along these lines where you exploit the fact that infinity + 1 = infinity. So you could claim that 1 = 0 or something along those lines.

OP here

9.0 + 1 = 10.0
99.0 + 1 = 100.0
999.0 + 1 = 1000.0
...
...999.0 + 1 = ...000.0 = 0
The "1" never appears.

inb4 "divergence," I find it ironic that atheists rage at "god of the gaps" theories but then throw up their hands and say "it diverges to infinity" when presented with well-defined numbers like ...999.999... .

How ironic.

You left out significant figures.

Isn't your God a significant figure?
You'd best be leaving him out too.

not OP
i know ..999.0 look like shit
but so does 0.999... too
there are no infinitely long numbers
it's just a flawed idea

The ellipsis are a stand in for when you recognize that converting a rational number to decimal form will enter a loop that will not terminate.

This happens, for example, with 1 / 3, which ends up being .333...

You could think of it as saying, "I tried to convert 1/3 to decimal form but it was obvious that it could not be done in a finite amount of time."

They are, by definition, the same number. I do not think people are skeptical of this until you try to claim that .999... is the same as 1. Then something goes wrong in their brains.

>> No.2417860

If you define that number as the limit of an infinite sequence, there's probably a metric under which it exists(some combination of the p-adics and the real numbers), but there's no guarantee that you'll be able to separate ...999.999... as (...999.0) + (0.999...).

this is just a problem of the counting system (base-10)
if you use the ternary numeral system (base-3)
to divide
1/3 = 0.333.. (decimal)
it would be
1/10 = 0.1 (ternary)
just the numerical system has to be a multiple of the number you're dividing by
problem solved.
